Stuart Bailes

The work of Stuart Bailes is positioned on an interesting fault-line of photographic practice, being, as it is, both visually abstract and also scrupulously direct in the means of its production, touching on a contradictory relationship that is central to the medium - this seeming abstraction is, in fact, a consequence of photography’s own innate tendencies pushed to the limit. We might see a reference to modernist reduction in his choice of motif, but there is good reason to think of these images less as visual studies in form (although they are that, to some extent) and more like the search for an understanding of what photography can do on its own terms - you can find a video of him discussing his work after the cut.
