Sign upHow ArtSnacks was born
In the fall of 2012 my Sister told me she was thinking about getting my fiancé, Lauren, a 3 month gift subscription to this thing called Birchbox. Every month she would be sent a cute little box full of about 5 cosmetic and beauty samples. She wouldn’t know beforehand what samples she would be receiving, making the contents of the box a surprise. Lauren loves makeup and I thought it was a terrific gift for my sister to give.
I instantly wondered if there was something like this for me. I love drawing pens & art supplies. After a few days of searching online the only thing that was close was a service that sent you a craft project to do at home every month.
I started questioning why there wasn’t a service that just delivered cool art supplies?
Aren’t cosmetics just art supplies for your face?
I knew what I wanted and it didn’t exist, so with the help of my sister, we built it.
Don’t Learn How To Code, Learn How To Make Things
jakelevine.meYou know what is fun? Making things. Turning a spark of creative insight into a thing that you can show people — a thing that people can use and from which they can derive some iota of pleasure or utility. Start with a simple website. Basic HTML and CSS. No product is too small. In fact, the opposite is true. If you don’t know how to build the first version of your product in a weekend — a usable working version, don’t try to build it. Programming is a means to an end, not an end in itself. You should be trying to do as little of it as possible to make the thing that you want.
The fastest way to make something is to simply start. Don’t get caught in the never ending process of learning, researching, and over-thinking your idea.
