This song always makes me cry for some reason

Stars Fell On Alabama

Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald

Stars fell on Alabama by Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald

We lived our little drama, we kissed in a field of white
And stars fell on Alabama last night
I can’t forget the glamor, your eyes held a tender light
And stars fell on Alabama last night

I never planned in my imagination a situation so heavenly
A fairy land where no one else could enter
And in the center, just you and me
My heart beat like a hammer, my arms wound around you tight
And stars fell on Alabama last night

I never planned in my imagination a situation so heavenly
A fairy land where no one else could enter
In the center, just you and me
My heart beat like a hammer, my arms wound around you tight
And stars fell on Alabama last night

If you’re new to the story, find Part One here.

She wondered if he was okay, finding a way to cope with his life as it had seemed to be causing him such stress. It wasn’t her usual reaction. She’d seen so many sad sack men and heard so many depressing stories that it wasn’t like her to dwell. She allowed them to live their lives and not worry about their issues.   It was all a part of her job. She listened with one ear, managing to seem interested in their stories, but she never allowed herself to become emotionally invested.

He seemed to be the exception to the rule.

Enjoy!

No. 5 - Stars Fell On Alabama by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

This tune was a jazz staple during the 1930s and 40s and was originally written by Frank Perkins with lyrics by Mitchell Parish. It has been performed by literally hundreds of artists but my personal favorite version is done as a duet by Ella Fitzgerld and Louis Armstrong.

The Million Dollar Band used to perform a version of this song during the pregame show when Kathryn Scott was still the director.

The title refers to the Leonid meteor shower that had been observed in Alabama in November of 1833. As reported by the Florence Gazette: “There were thousands of luminous bodies shooting across the firmament in every direction. There was little wind and not a trace of clouds, and the meteors succeeded each other in quick succession.”

Thus it was called, “the night the stars fell”.
