A strange story - but if you look beyond the obvious headline, you can start to think about how social media has now become such an intrinsic part of everyday life for some people.
A couple of years ago, there was the guy who tweeted the world’s first plane crash. Then there was guy in Pakistan who was tweeting when Osama was being hunted down. And now this.
I like this very much…not the story, but the evolution of social media.

Police Arrest "V For Vendetta" Masked Gunman In Oakland, CA, After Six-Hour Office Depot Standoff
![]()
Oakland, CA — Police stormed an Office Depot store in Northern California early Saturday and ended a six hour standoff by arresting the gunman holed up inside.
Authorities say he was the only person in the building and was not injured. His name wasn’t released.
Earlier reports indicated he had hostages, but an Oakland police officer told The Associated Press no one else was in the business.
So last night..
I went to my boyfriends place. We were sitting on the porch and his neighbor is coming home and says ‘hey, there’s a shooter on the loose, just a few blocks away. Might wanna get inside’
So, we went inside after a few minutes. Turned on the news to see what was going on. Found out there was a man who murdered 7 people on the loose in my own city. Nothing was really happening when I turned on the TV. But about 20 minutes later 6 police cars flew past Alan’s place, and only a few minutes later I saw the ‘high speed chase’ live on TV. They were traveling on roads that I travel on. That is what got to me. the fact that I drive on those roads. He got on to East I-96 and then drove across the median and started going the wrong way on Westbound I-96. How scary would that be? So fucking scary if you ask me…
When they said he was down near plainfield and coit my boyfriend got worried. His parents live over by plainfield.
So we pretty much followed the story the whole night. Whenever they showed the map that had the standoff on it you could see Alan’s parents house. scary! At the beginning Alan even said that he was going to kill himself, maybe even the hostages too.
And alas, he did kill himself. It’s a relief to know that they don’t have to worry about catching him now, but it’s like no justice was served.
Crazy night.
