The Maine - SIUC - 4.30.11

Last night was a last minute Maine show in Carbondale, IL!! The boys found out the DAY OF that it was open to the public! Being Carbondale is only 2 hours from St. Louis, (and one from Jackson, where I was) talk about a great surprise!!!

Tabitha and I ran into a few of the boys beforehand..which was another great surprise since we were just roaming the campus because we had no idea where anything was! We got to catch up with them…it had been FIVE month..aka..way too long!!

They played in an auditorium which was quite strange to have seats for a rock show..but it didn’t really matter once the show started!

The set was PERFECT.  They played for an hour.  The setlist was:

My Heroine
Right Girl
Listen To Your Heart
I Must Be Dreaming
Into Your Arms
Don’t Stop Now
Color
(Pour Some Sugar On Me)
Inside of You
Girls Do What They Want
Polly
Whoever She Is
We’ll All Be

Hearing “My Heroin” first literally sent chills down my body.  I couldn’t believe how much I missed THAT feeling.  It’s a feeling that I can’t explain…I only get it for them…and I see all kinds if bands all of the time…but it’s a special feeling for The Maine…and it will never be replaced.

About three songs in…I noticed Garrett saying something to Max side stage….oh just that he needed to puke and needed a trashcan!! I felt terrible for him…but if you didn’t see him go back to the trash..you’d NEVER know he wasn’t feeling well.  He still rocked out like there was no tomorrow! Yet another reason I adore him.

Being that the show was at a college…the meatheads were there..so of course people were yelling for them to cover “Freebird”..and “Pour Some Sugar On Me”…but John just decided to sing some Sugar Ray.  Okay..great! It was so cute!  Then they let some kids on stage and did the first verse and chorus of “Pour Some Sugar On Me”!!! I about died.  It was so unexpected (like everything else that night!) and hilarious! The guys had no idea how to play it, so they winged it..and guess what? It sounded perfect.

They changed up “Everything I Asked For” and “Girls Do What They Want”..which were AWESOME!! “EIAF” had a reggae feel to it and it was so fun! “GDWTW” was sped up..so it was hard to keep up with them at some points because I didn’t know what was going on..but in the end..I LOVED both of the new versions! I hope they continue them on tour!

Hearing “Polly” in person…was just indescribable.  That’s all I can say about that song.

Before “We’ll All Be,” John talked about the local tornadoes and how he hoped they didn’t affect anyone and I thought it was so sweet for him to bring it up.  John also said a sweet thank you to Tabitha and I.  Another reason why I adore him!

Post show.

We got to say our hellos/goodbyes to the boys.  Garrett was our entertainment of the night because of his boots. Kennedy really does hear everything. The rain started AGAIN, but they all still stayed out for the handful of fans that stuck around.  Pat was just amazing to us.  Max is the best TM ever.  Dallas, Austin and Houston can be here NOW!!

Friends: One Fall Afternoon // Carbondale, IL

Fall is amazing.  Fun is amazing.  Friends are amazing.  Question of the season: why not combine all three?!

I had the privilege to hang out with eight wonderful ladies who are friends through one of Vine’s awesome Monday-night small groups :)  All of them had such great personalities and beautiful souls. Further, in ways I can’t completely put into words, when together, they become something of a combined force.  It’s like they make each other shine brighter.

Spending the afternoon with them gave me a better understanding of how joy can have so many different facets and expressions; and how community involves breadth as well as depth of beauty.

Thank you, ladies, for a fun Fall afternoon :)

Proof that silly goes hand in hand with fun most times :)

Writing scholarship application letters is the bane of my existence. Essentially, all I’m doing is trying to find a way to eloquently say:

SIUC isn't thaaaat bad. I went away for college originally and ended up transferring to SIUC. I grew up close by so no one wants to go there because it's just 15 minutes away, but once you're actually experiencing the campus it's much different. Yeah, it's a party school, but there are a lot of students who don't party as well. Carbondale is pretty if you like hiking and nature. And also, it's cheap. That's a big plus.

Thanks! Yeah, I am all for nature and I’ve seen pictures and videos, etc. It’s lovely looking. I’m actually going to the open house in February. Of course, price is a factor and I know it’s cheap, which makes it even more attractive. I think it just matters what kind of a person you are and how you make your experience there. My heart is set on SIUC, so I don’t have a problem. Thanks :)
