Sorrow

The National

The National || Sorrow

In honor of their 6 hour performance of this song today.

Your Eyes

While looking for the morning sun
I found a window through your eyes
uncovered a sad and stormy past
and discovered where tomorrow lies

Revealed within their opal pools
were empty seasons draped in grey
yet while listening to a robin sing
I somehow found my heart today

Through the teardrops in your eyes
I saw our forever hidden deep within
everything I lost has been returned
and I will never need to search again

Sorrow and Love

Sorrow is a special gift my friend
delivering more love for us to give
giving not taking truly makes for
a far superior way for all to live

As you and I know only too well
her kisses hurt let’s not pretend
yet she teaches compassion too
and we’ll be standing in the end

Reaching deeply into our hearts
breaking making well once more
sorrow and love together as one
will lead us to that distant shore

I Cried

I cried
I cried this morning
I cried for myself
I cried for our little blue planet home
I cried for all who seek in vain
ever craving love and finding none
I cried for the children starving
their fragile lights slowly fading
as another desperate mother’s plea
rains down unfelt or heard upon our deafness
I cried for the groundless hatred dividing
the masses into armies of us and them
our hearts hardened by ideological dogma
I cried for strays
for all the unwanted old and young
oft abused or even abandoned
I cried for innocence callously stolen
in the name of education
another dutiful citizen molded
I cried for the coldness of life
as one by one those we love are taken from us
I cried
I cried this morning
I cried for the voiceless who could not cry out
for themselves
I cried, and to my amazement soon discovered
that in spilling compassionate tears for others
there was no longer any need to cry for me

“I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. ”

—Agatha Christie
