i don’t even ship them but i just see more people bashing it than actually shipping it. i don’t agree with misogynistic or racist behaviour but i honestly i don’t think none of those are an inherent trait of a pairing. let people like what they like.

ok, i feel like i should address this. i ship it. hard. steve/tony was my original comic book otp, and i think there is a strong basis for it in the iron man comics.

the problem is 100% with the fandom, rather than a) any individual fans or b) inherent to the ship itself. but that doesn’t change the fact that right now, imo, this fandom is typifying the kind of problematic behavior endemic to many of tumblrs pet ships.

someone posted a request to the fandom at large asking for receipts. they don’t believe that people are engaging in offensive behavior, and according to them, the suggestion that it’s going on is just as offensive as the racism/sexism itself. and frankly, that’s gross.

i think it’s pretty undeniable that some parts of the fandom actively erase pepper and rhodey from the iron man narrative. just look at all the fan works that have literally edited pepper out of the iron man 3 trailer and replaced it w/ steve. pretending it isn’t happening is willful ignorance at best.

i am very happy to let people ship what they’re gonna ship, but i ask that people at least acknowledge that there are some unsavory elements in fandom. that’s it. i don’t think that’s too much to do.

i agree it’s wrong but it still seems like you need to follow a set of rules to enjoy something. and honestly that edited gifset could have been with anyone else and it wouldn’t have mattered. is taking it too far imo.

yeah, i mean. i guess … you do? like, honestly, i think people do need to follow a set of rules, and those rules are:

don’t be a racist
don’t be a misogynist
don’t fetishize m/m relationships in a way that’s dehumanizing to real gay ppl

and that’s it???? and okay, sure, sometimes fans are assholes to other fans, but i genuinely believe that is you just try to follow those three rules, you’re kind of set.

that edited gifset could have been with anyone, you’re right. but i feel like we have to look at trends, here. it could have been with anyone, but it only would have been with steve, or maybe loki.

again, this isn’t about shipping. it’s about slash culture.

i totally get that it’s frustrating to be a shipper who doesn’t participate in this kind of grossness. it’s irritating from all sides, i know. but at the end of the day, i feel like i have to take a deep breath and make sure my shipper hurt takes a backseat to the feelings of people whose real lives are effected when popular culture engages in a tacit support of unacceptable behavior.
