SmartBuildings to the next level

There’s a lot of talk these days about smart buildings and having smart controllers ALL over buildings (residential and commercial). There will be sensors and controllers in every appliance and monitors on every electrical device in a building. They will all be networked together in some sort of communication and monitoring system in order to maximize efficiency. Large companies like Google and Intel are starting to look into these types of devices and developing them. Don’t be surprised if you see something from apple also to the likes of ‘iHome’. I think eventually the goal will be to maximize efficiency in a building and sell excess power back to the grid in either one of two ways:

1. Just make smart systems and sell energy back to the grid and have the consumers save money on their power bill
2. Sell these ‘smart items’ to consumers at a discounted cost but have some sort of leasing program where the energy is sold back to the grid minimizing the power bill for the consumer but then also bringing in income for the leasing party.

Thinking Cities - ICT is changing the game

ericsson.com

This is a brilliant piece by Ericsson on what smart cities do for everyday people. It explores some of the possibilities and in its simplicity, create a window where the regular person can catch a glimpse of life in tomorrows city..

It is 17 minutes long and worth watching.
