Book Review: Gray by Pete Wentz
Pete Wentz; what does that name mean to you? To me, it means one of the guys I’ve looked up to since I was around….11 years old. To others, he might just be that guy from Fall Out Boy, or the lyricist and bassist of Fall Out Boy, or just the guy who married that Simpson sister. Whatever your opinion is and whichever way you may look at him, don’t just shut the door on him yet because he just brought something great to the world.
HOW I IMAGINE JONAH LEHRER GOT HIS LATEST BOOK DEAL
Howdy everyone! So as everyone may or may not know, Jonah Lehrer was a phenomenally talented and acclaimed young author and journalist for The New Yorker, among other publications. He’s still young, but the other adjectives became debatable after it became widely known that he’d been doing everything from recycling his own material, to plagiarizing that of others, to just plain making shit up.
And for the literary and publishing community, which is already always salivating for a scandal and a downfall of any of its latest bright stars, everyone was all:
He got fired by everyone, his articles were pulled, his books were recalled and pulped, and he became a laughingstock, a punching bag, a smarmy-voiced sump of schadenfreude and derision from anyone who cared enough to indulge in this sort of gossip.
So here’s how I imagine this new book deal came to pass.
Jonah Lehrer looked in the mirror every day since his debasing and he saw this:
Then his agents at Wylie talked to a few publishers, each of which was like:
Meanwhile, Simon and Schuster has been looking in the mirror every morning since Barnes and Noble refused to sell their books, and they see this:
So when Lehrer darkened their door, they offered him a deal that basically went like this:
Meanwhile, Lehrer met with the S&S legal department, who said:
The news (and the leaked book proposal) hit the airwaves, and everyone (including, I imagine, Lehrer’s agent) was just:

But I’m sure Barnes and Noble and other folks in publishing are looking at this and they’re like:
So I guess we’ll have to wait until the book comes out.

Does this make sense to anyone else?
1. Stephen Harper is Canada’s Prime Minister
2. He just wrote a book on hockey, probably the most Canadian sport ever
3. Canadian houses rely heavily on grants provided by Harper’s government in order to compete with the multinational houses
4. Harper and his agent signed on to publish with Simon and Schuster (based in NY) instead of a Canadian publishing house
5. Not only is S&S not Canadian, it is also the only multinational (until recently) that didn’t have a Canadian publishing program
So, to sum up: Harper could have signed on with a Canadian house and allowed a Canadian company to profit off his supremely Canadian book considering his government works so hard to fund them anyway, but instead he chose the only option where his book would be manufactured in the United States. So not only did the houses his government helps to fund miss out on huge sales from his book, our printers are also going to miss out on manufacturing the book because it will have to be printed in the States.

Author fan-girling
So, usually on this blog, I just post fandom things…I don’t really talk about my “real life,” but I wanted to share this tidbit.
I’m in my final semester of a MFA Creative Writing Program. I had my first (second) class of the semester tonight with a professor new to the school. I’d looked her up before and thought her book looked interesting. She presented at a reading the school hosted tonight as well, and I was impressed with her many impressive credentials. I was impressed by her in class as well - so good first impression. And she offered some great advice right off the bat.
I feel really lucky to be studying under her this semester, because not only is she a legit Simon and Schuster author, but she is also a writer for The Huffington Post. I’m so excited for this workshop!
