“Some people are uncomfortable with silences. Not me. I’ve never cared much for call and response. Sometimes I will think of something to say and then I ask myself: is it worth it? And it just isn’t.” ”

—Miranda July

I’ve learned that the worst punishment you can do to a person is silence. With silence, you don’t even have to torture the person yourself; they would be doing it to themselves. A billion thoughts could have gone through that person’s head while you’re ignoring them.

And that, my dear, is killing me.

“Sometimes I wished to express my sensations in my own mode, but the uncouth and inarticulate sounds which broke from me frightened me into silence again.”

—Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
