Part of the fun of coming up with sci-fi is imagining what the future will be like. Predictions are almost always certainly wrong, but it’s fun to speculate about anything.

In the above image, artist LoopyDave points out that one recurring theme seems to pervade all sci-fi, that women will have THIS hairstyle. It’s unclear exactly why that’s the case, but bangs are in, along with…what’s that called? A bob? I don’t know my female hairstlyes.

I can name all of these except middle right, top right and top left. Help me out?

So I told my professor that I have PDFs of D&D stuff and everyone looked at me really surprisedly because I’m not who you’d expect to be into that kind of stuff. But then he asked who else had played D&D and half the class raise their hands. And no one looked judgey.

Con or Bust: Request Time Approaching!

con-or-bust.livejournal.com

The submission period for October through December cons opens on Sunday, the 15th of August! Requests are only open for ten days. Spread the word about the Carl Brandon Society’s Con or Bust and make sure that everyone who would like to use it gets the chance!

Unimportant aside: They seem to be doing a good job of connecting to interested, relevant cons about this. They’re reaching out to both big names and less known groups.

From the Con or Bust LJ:

The Short Version

  • If you are a person of color/non-white person who wants to attend a convention about science fiction and fantasy, you can apply.
  • Con or Bust divides the calendar year into quarters, and takes applications for cons in each quarter for a ten-day period that starts six weeks before that quarter (illustrative calendar).
  • The application is a Google Docs form. Fill it out as completely as possible, watch your e-mail for any questions, and expect to hear whether Con or Bust can assist you by a month before the quarter that your con is in.

Con or Bust is not limited by geography or by type of con-goer. It is not a scholarship or “merit based.” Its goal is to help fans of color go to SFF cons and be their own awesome selves. As long as you’re not requesting assistance with the intention of ignoring the con entirely, Con or Bust is for you.

Once Upon A Blog...: Magic vs Technology and the Wonder Factor In Fairy Tales

Really interesting thoughts on how technology today compares to magic. Some quotes below:

I had a whole conversation with a friend on Twitter about a year ago, talking about how our use of the internet in particular could very well be seen as magic. Heck, we even tap into grounding magics and unseen forces (electricity, wi-fi, digital signals) by using various gateways (you need power cords or stored power, a computer and the knowledge to make the computer do what you want it to), use a ritual (plug in, turn on, software load), add an access spell (password typing, often while using phrases such as “come one, come on, come on!”) to gain access to the unseen world (the internet) and our effectiveness in doing whatever it is we’re wanting to do (online) being limited to how powerful in magic we are or how much power we’ve paid for (computer/internet knowledge, levels of access, pay our bills), our magical training (knowledge of navigation and software use), if the magic is stable and accessible that day or season (server connection and function) etc… There are even - if you look closely - a whole set of superstitions about the use and handling of computers, internet navigation and sites. And a virus could easily be seen as a curse in the most basic sense.

Once I started looking around (on the internet of course!) I found many, many instances of people virtually saying the same thing. Check out these links HEREHERE, a more in-depth look at the ideas HERE (though I would have to add that I think there have always been magical practitioners who are interested in “taking the black box apart” and it’s not just scientists who do that) and a more sci-fi vs fantasy take HERE.

We live in a magical time of everyday miracles - all of which we usually take for granted. We shouldn’t. Especially now where we’ve reached the wireless age and it wouldn’t take much for our entire way of life to be wiped out.
