Hi V, very good question!
Ever since you asked this, I’ve been thinking about it.

Brandon needed a redesign big time, and I started by looking at different breeds of fish, specifically looking for ones that swim really fast.
Since he’s a competitive swimmer, I decided to just go with the fastest species of fish alive, the sailfish.
See the thing is, sailfish are very commonly found in the Indian Ocean, and you know what that means!

Brandon is now South Asian/Indian.

It was always in his personality to be a preppy (but smart!) surfer guy who loved Chemistry. Even though that was originally based on a white friend of mine, I also know a lot of people who go to the university where I live that fit this description who are also Desi/South Asian.

Diversity never hurt anyone, right?

Also, I always planned on his mom being a lesbian and civil rights activist, and I love seeing brown queer people represented in stories.

I know a lot of people won’t be happy with his change (a lot of them weren’t happy with the main fours’ redesigns…especially Ren lol) but that’s never stopped me, now has it? ( ´ ▽ ` )ﾉ
