Alright fandom people, I've got to level with you
I love Doctor Who a great deal. I am an embarrassing squeeing, shipping, feels having fangirl. Sometimes I embarrass MYSELF alone in my room when I fangirl over something.
I love hipster V.S. fandom posts as much as the next person.
But now I’ve got to be blunt with some of you. I just saw a post of a carved angel on a grave stone. The OP BEGGED fandom bloggers to please leave it be. The OP then went on to rapturously describe how much they loved the craftsmanship of the angel, how much meaning was behind the placement of the angel etc.
And then someone made it be about Supernatural with other people snickering hipsters: 0 fandoms: 1
Guys, chill the fuck out, in plain English.
Do you not realize how irritating it is to have EVERYTHING you want to share with a friend be turned into something about their favorite show?
Have some examples:
“Man, I really love butter-“
“OH MY GODZZZZ DID YOU KNOW <so-and-so> LOVES BUTTER TOO?!?!? AHAHAHA MY FANDOM”

“Hey, I’m working on this sculpture of an angel, tell me what you think?”
“DON’T BLINK OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG RUN AWAY WEEPING ANGEL!!”
“B-but I worked really hard on this.”
“So I’m shopping for a car and there was this nice Chevy Impala-“

Can you see how this is irritating?
Now I’m sure you think you’re just being a “good” fanperson. Or you’re going “It’s just online! So what! I’d never behave like this in real life!”
Well every time a serious discussion is derailed for a fandom reference I want you to think of it in the context as an actual face to face conversation.
And I know many of us have encountered people who DO behave like this in real life. Every time you talk to them it turns into a rant fest about their favorite topic. Which I won’t lie, it can be fun to discuss with them and it’s fun to hear the topics people are passionate about. BUT. There is a big but.
If you are dismissing people’s serious discussions, serious artwork, serious problems and complaints to make tons of snarky and sassy fandom references you are being an annoying flibbergibbet.
Now I’m not saying “How mean of you!!! boooo hoooooo! Leave them all aloooooone! Never reference your fandom agaaaain!” Then you’ve missed the whole point of this.
I’m saying don’t be “that” guy.
