Even if you are not old enough to remember the music of the 40’s and 50’s you have definitely seen pictures of the top entertainers of that period. The rockabilly culture was based on music that was country and bluegrass in style the birth of rock n’ roll. This is when men slicked their hair back or styled it in a pompadour. Some even considered the rockabilly hairstyles to be the greaser look and the bad boys in all the big films depicting that era had that type of cut.
Commonly this hairstyle involved a cut with short sides and a long top and back. This way the top could be swept up into a pompadour or slicked back depending upon their personal style. For some the hair was messed up a bit on top; this either came off as a bad boy look or a sensual look depending on the clothing worn with the hairstyle.
It was popular with entertainers such as the Rat Pack or the King of Rock. The type of man that chose this style gave off the impression that he lived on the edge had a dangerous streak in him. But he was also very stylish and women found this very appealing especially when their favorite singers of that day sported the look.

In the past grease was used to coat the hair to slick it back and to give it the pompadour shape. Fortunately that is no longer necessary and except for the die-hard rockabilly fans gels can be used today. Since gel comes in many different formulas now a gel that dries with the wet look is the best way to achieve the right rockabilly style.
For the pompadour don’t slick the hair straight back. Comb the hair straight up and let it fall naturally back on your head. That will give the right height and look. If you want the style but not the wet look you can use hair gel and a blow dryer to get the same results. Just use the gel on the roots of the hair when it is wet and blow dry upside down to create the right height.
Of course not everyone went for the height of the pompadour; they preferred to slick it back. Again this usually required grease for the look but gel works perfectly fine today. This is a versatile look at it can be all slicked back or there can be a part that is slight off center or a crooked part to give unique twist on the look. This is a very popular style for the classic men’s hairstyle even today.
Although the style started decades ago it has never really gone away. Conventions for rockabilly music always have men and women showing up not only in the rockabilly hairstyle but also in the clothing and the cars they drive. It is a subculture that has spread worldwide and as long as there is rock n’ roll there will be rockabilly hairstyles for men.
