(The Washington Post) - An escort who appeared on a video claiming that Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) paid her for sex has told Dominican authorities that she was instead paid to make up the claims and has never met or seen the senator, according to court documents and two people briefed on her claim.
The woman said a local lawyer had approached her and a fellow escort and asked them to help frame Menendez and a top donor, Salomon Melgen, according to affidavits obtained by The Washington Post.
That lawyer has in turn identified a second Dominican lawyer who he said gave the woman a script and paid her to read the claims aloud. The first lawyer said he found out only later that the remarks would be videotaped and used against Menendez, the affidavits say.
The claims of two women that they had had sex with Menendez seemed to confirm a tipster’s allegations that Menendez had patronized prostitutes while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. The tipster, who last spring began e-mailing allegations to a government watchdog group and the FBI, said he had evidence that Menendez had relations with underage prostitutes and participated in sex parties arranged by Melgen, his friend and political backer.
FBI agents conducting interviews in the Dominican Republic have found no evidence to back up the tipster’s allegations, according to two people briefed on their work.
The buzz around this is saying that the right wing blog mentioned in the article is Breitbart.com, and lo and behold, Breitbart.com is running a story today claiming that the Washing Post spoke to the wrong call girl - never mind the fact that the FBI has found no evidence so far that the original claims against Sen. Robert Menendez were even true.

(The Miami Herald) - Two maids allege that FBI agents from Miami tried to brow-beat them into making incriminating statements against U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, during questioning about alleged sex parties at the Dominican Republic resort home of a South Florida doctor who hosted Menendez numerous times.
The maids, both employees of Dr. Salomon Melgen, have asked the Dominican National Police to investigate the FBI’s interrogation of them, saying they were illegally detained and felt threatened during the interviews in February in La Romana.
The maids’ allegations were contained in written affidavits submitted to police on March 6. About two weeks later, Dominican police said that a Santo Domingo lawyer had paid three women to falsely claim on video camera last year that they had sex with Menendez in a possible smear campaign.
The more that comes out about this ordeal, the more convoluted and downright shady the whole thing gets. Someone was trying really hard to bring down Menendez.

Five U.S. congressmen, including three Republicans and two Democrats, made calls to investigate the extent of Iran’s influience in Latin America and the U.S., in part due to the revelations of Univision’s documentary, “The Iranian Threat” (La Amenaza Iraní).
Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey and chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, said he wanted to organize a hearing previously planned for February 2012 “as soon as posible,” in part because of the Univision documentary.
“The Univision investigation presented well-documented information, including videos, audio recordings and interviews showing a conspiracy involving the governments of Iran, Venezuela and Cuba to launch cyber and other attacks against U.S. territory,” read the statement released by Sen. Melendez’s office.
“As the Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, I plan to conduct a hearing as soon as possible to investigate these very serious allegations and the U.S. response to Iranian aggression.”

Latino Democrat puts pressure on Obama to provide relief for some immigrants

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) on Monday launched an online petition aimed at the White House, plugging an initiative that would make it easier for some undocumented immigrants to gain legal status.
Under current policy, anyone who is known to be in the U.S. illegally for more than 180 days and agrees to voluntarily leave the country before entering deportation proceedings is barred from reentering for three to ten years. That includes many immigrants who qualify for visas because they have family members who are U.S. citizens or residents, but who don’t apply for them because they would have to leave the country in order to do so. The petition by Menendez asks President Obama to allow those individuals to request a waiver from the bar from within the United States.
“Our effort in launching [the petition] is to try to convince the administration that there is a groundswell of support for this type of administrative relief,” Menendez told Univision News. “And we believe that this effort is important because we cannot achieve a legislative victory in this environment, in this Congress.”

Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey is holding up President Obama’s nomination of a judge to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the only time a Democrat has tried to block one of Mr. Obama’s judicial nominees.
Mr. Menendez would not comment. But the nominee, Patty Shwartz, has been in a relationship for more than two decades with the head of the public corruption unit for New Jersey’s federal prosecutor. And that unit investigated the senator during his 2006 election fight, an inquiry Mr. Menendez has long contended was politically motivated.

The Senators state that the “cancellation of the preseason will negatively affect workers, businesses, and families in our state, and a failure to resolve this dispute in time for the regular season would impose an even greater hardship.”
They added that the a canceled NHL season could result in “millions of dollars in lost economic activity” in Newark and it could leave people out of work “when our state unemployment rate is already at a 30-year high.”
They also argued that other NHL cities will face similar hardships in the event of a lost hockey season.
“As you consider your next steps, we encourage you to keep in mind the communities, workers and families that would be hurt by a further disruption in the season,” the letter urges Bettman and Fehr.
