I wonder, how the prophet (saws) maintained his smile in the face of his oppressors, let alone suppress anger.

مَّا يَفْعَلُ اللَّهُ بِعَذَابِكُمْ إِن شَكَرْتُمْ وَآمَنتُمْ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ شَاكِرًا عَلِيمًا

 “Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and have believed in Him? And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative (of good), All-Knowing.” — Qur’an (4:147) 

I think we fail to realize that Allah (swt) does not want to punish us. In fact one can argue that He wants quite the opposite. Through hundreds of acts one can be purified of their sins, through seeking forgiveness and  just being thankful we can receive the love and mercy of our Lord. It’s just that simple.
