Shopping is often likened to a drug for many reasons. For one, it can get your emotions worked up, and for another, for its ability to temporarily make you ‘lose your mind.’ More often than not, the game of shopping is rigged against the buyers. Companies spend a lot of money thinking of ways to get people buying their goods. They hire designers, psychologists, and statisticians just to try and make their products sell more. Here are some tips that can help you get the better of your shopping experience.

Know Your Needs

Before you go shopping for a new flat-screen tv, rangehood or new refrigerator, make sure you write down what you really need. Will you need it to serve 10 people or just yourself? What kind of space are you planning to store it? How often do you need it or will you use it? Do you need it to be portable? It is best that you answer these kinds of questions before heading to the shop. This way you do not end up buying items that will not fulfill your needs. There have been many instances that I spent a lot of money on an item that was cool, and only to find it a month later as a useless piece of junk. Don’t be like me; know the “why” and “what for” before you go shopping.

A shiny piece of appliance always looks good in the showroom. It will always look desirable, clean and amazing. A month later that shiny new thing can look like it’s been with you for years. Time can only tell how it will fare and perform. If you do not want to end up regretting your purchase, ask your friends or relatives if they have the item you have, and ask them if you can check it out. Go see it as it operates, ask your friends what they have difficulties with, and inspect it thoroughly.  This way you will know if it will be worth the money you are planning to sink into it.

 Lastly, double team!

Don’t go to a shopping mall alone, especially if there rangehoods for sale, or TVs with a 50% discount. You’ll easily end up on the chopping block of your credit card if you do not come prepared. Armed with the knowledge of knowing what you need, and someone to keep you focused on the goal, you’ll be able to fend off the desires to go on an impulse buy.
