Representations of the single mother

Brooklyn based, Jamaican photographer Radcliffe Roye’s series on single mothers captures the gaze and aura of single mothers, that look of determination tinged with sadness. A sign of brilliant photography when you want to know more about the image - who is she and what’s her story. Roye taught himself photography on a 21 day walk from Montego Bay to Kingston and now focuses on documentary photography.

As single mothers we are placed in a high risk category for falling through the cracks and the representations often reflect that. The images that represent our role are rarely positive or uplifting.
