So apparently, Misha has referred to Castiel’s storyline this season as that of “The Manchurian Candidate”, a cold war novel made into a film (remake in 2004)

so there’s this brainwashed guy, saved from a battlefield by the communists, who’s turned into an assassin against his will; he meets a girl, he falls in love with her and they are happy for a while, before his mind control kicks in and he’s ordered to kill her. He does so, and is devastated by it.

And we have Castiel, rescued from Purgatory, controlled by Naomi, briefly happy with Dean and Sam (8x08) and well, apparently Castiel makes a stab at Dean in 8x17 /coughloveinterestcough

Their “game” and conflict is just a massive metaphor for Alpha kid shipping wars
