:( staying up til then. i have my last final tomorrow, /depressed. but i have meant to ask you, idk if i'm alone on this, but what are your thoughts on jlaw saying things about skinny girls looking like birds, scarecrows, etc? it's really been annoying me/ making me a bit uncomfortable for a while, and i wanted to know your thoughts!

Oh man!! Good luck on your final, bb!!!

So, about JLaw. Here are a couple quotes she’s made about weight and stuff:

“I like food. I don’t really diet or anything. I’m miserable when I’m dieting and I like the way I look. I’m really sick of all these actresses looking like birds.”

“I knew that if I was going to be naked in front of the world, I wanted to look like a woman and not a prepubescent 13-year-old boy…I’m so sick of people thinking that’s what we’re supposed to look like.”

And, I think we should all note that this is NOT body positivity. It’s not. Is she correct in saying that women shouldn’t be EXPECTED to be skinny and that their value comes from being skinny? Yes, she is correct there. But, everywhere else? She’s wrong.

Skinny people are real people, too. It’s like that whole thing about how “real women have curves.” Um, there are no qualifications for what a “real woman” is. There is no one set thing that allows you to achieve “real woman status.” She’s shaming females that are skinny, claiming they don’t look like “real women,” or even people at all (birds), SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE “A LOT OF MEAT ON THEIR BONES.”

There’s a way to do body positivity the right way (and, coincidentally enough, her Hunger Games costar Jacqueline Emerson does it the right way) without making a certain group of people feel like less than human beings.
