I’ve isolated the larger bears (grizzly, Kodiak, and polar bear) and the African lion into their own category.  This is due to the fact, in regards to the bears, that these massive land mammals have very dense fur and thick layers of fat, leading to the need for certain rifle calibers.  The grizzly bear can weigh from 400-790 pounds, the Kodiak bear can weigh up to 1,400 pounds, and the polar bear can weigh up to 1,600 pounds.  The African lion, though only weighing 420 pounds, is also extremely dangerous, and it is due to these animals’ hefty build and ferocious behavior that it is important to be able to stop them in their tracks and leave no room for error.

A heavy round that would do the job all-around is the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum in 300 grain, though it typically fires a 270 grain bullet.  It may be a little too much gun for some people however, and so other acceptable calibers include the .338 Winchester Magnum (with bonded bullets), any .30 caliber magnums with 180+ grain bonded bullets, .300 WSM, and the .30-06 with a heavy bullet.  Bonded bullets are ideal for deep penetration for these mammals, since they slow down expansion, prevent fragmentation, and enhance weight retention.
