P&G’s Smart Bag was developed to promote Tide laundry detergent in Dubai, and to also tackle the alarming plastic waste problem in the UAE. The Smart Bag is a reusable shopping bag with a clever design that resembles a ruled notepad on the exterior. It comes with a marker so consumers can write their shopping list directly on the bag. The bag can be washed clean and reused to create a new list of reminders.
The Smart Bags were produced by ad agency Leo Burnett and were initially distributed to consumers, fashion editors and influential bloggers. However, after gaining wide-spread popularity, Tide plans to make the bags available on a regional basis.
The UAE uses over 20 billion plastic bags each year. This has become such an environmental problem, that the Minister for Environment has a set goal for the UAE to become plastic bag-free by 2013.
