Deciphering Target’s Clearance Sales

roccoupons.wordpress.com

As a Target Enthusiast (and general lover of retail promotional strategies), I found this article to be pretty fantastic!

Here are a few simple rules for distinguishing between a good clearance deal and a great one at America’s favorite big box retailer.

Target Markdown Rules:

  • Target marks items down with percentages: 15%, 30%, 50%, 75% & 90%.
  • Item will remain at a percentage off for usually two weeks before progressing to the next level.
  • Target’s full prices end in 9. Thereafter each price drop will reduce the final digit in the price to either an 8, 6, or 4. (eg. A $9.99 item at 30% off will be priced $6.98).  The lowest the last digit will drop is to 4. If you see something you want and the price ends in 4, buy it. The price won’t go any lower.

Today, I was talking to this couple in Pay Less.

They must have been in thier late twenties. We randomly started talking about ugly work shoes lol (that’s what I went in to look for) and we suddenly got on the topic of relationships. Well I guess I was talking more to the girl than the guy. At one point he kind of just wandered off to the guy’s section.

ANYHOO, we were talking about our relationships and she was asking about my boyfriend and the whole dynamic of our relationship —> what we like to do, what we do in certain situations, etc. At that point, her boyfriend came back to us (I guess he was getting bored, obviously) and he kind of just listened to the end part of our conversation before we went our own ways. Right before our conversation ended, he said that I just might be one of the rarest type of girls around.

I don’t really know what he meant by it. Since he didn’t really elaborate, but I guess it’s a good thing?

Shop Smart, Pay Less: Household Edition

Did you ever ask yourself why you pay as much as you do for every day household items? Maybe it’s because you didn’t know any better, or maybe it’s because you think the more expensive brand can offer a better quality and trust. Whatever your reasons are, it’s time for the naked truth. When it comes to household items such as over-the-counter medications, toothbrushes, detergents, and even your digital appliances, the brand can be misleading, and we’re here to clear it all up!

Unfortunately, students are one of the main culprits of unnecessary spending, especially for every day products. Let’s take a look at some easy remedies that will save you time and money!

1.       Cleaning Supplies

Is it really necessary to have a cleaner for each part of your home? We have some great news! You don’t need a separate cleaner for your windows, dishwasher, counter tops, or floors. Firstly, if you don’t feel like preparing your own solution, go for generic! It works just as well and costs a fraction of the price, especially if there are added coupons!

If you really want to save some money – invest a small amount to make your own solution. If you mix up vinegar, baking soda, and some essential oils for scent, that’s all you need for a clean and fresh home!

2.       Toiletries

Stop buying your pricey shampoos, body washes, moisturizers, and conditioners! Did you know that the basic ingredients of soap and detergents are actually the same, no matter what price point you purchase these products at? Everything else including that lovely smell that draws you in actually washes right down the drain! All other cleaners are pricey because of their marketing and label, but don’t be fooled, their performance is no different!

3.       Over-the-Counter Medications

Brand name medications can cost over 40% more than a generic version. It’s important to check your labels for active ingredients. If the ingredients are the same, there’s no reason not to save a significant amount of savings!

4.       Detergents

This is something to pay close attention to coupons and discounts from the manufacturer. The truth of the matter is not all detergents are completely equal, but instead of sticking with one brand out of loyalty – go ahead and try a store brand. You’ll save a lot of money and may be surprised with the result. Not to mention, if you try a cold-wash detergent, you’ll also save money on your electricity bill!

5.       Digital Appliances

Technology is ever changing, and the same goes in the digital appliance world. The moment something new comes out, the older versions are discontinued. What that means, is you can spend hundreds of dollars on an appliance, have a piece break a year later, and the manufacturer already stopped making pieces for that product. That leaves you with a broken appliance and out of more cash. Stick to the basics like a standard coffee press, you can thank us later.

Do you stand by any of these tips? What types of remedies do you use for cleaning and saving money? Students are on a tough budget as it is, let’s save our money for what matters – like a college degree.

Q&A: Do military members pay more for auto insurance?

Question: Can an insurance company add points to your insurance for being in the military?  If so, why can it do this?

Answer:  You are more likely to get a discount for military service than a penalty.

While insurance companies do track points (referred to as insurance points) that cause your premiums to rise, those points stem from accidents and tickets, not your occupation. (See “Do insurers charge for each point on your license?” for more information on insurance points.)

Instead, if your auto insurance company has found that your occupation tends to make you a high-risk driver, you may pay higher base rates. Certain types of professions require one to drive a lot or keep long hours – such as lawyers, real estate agents, social workers and doctors — and statistically have been shown to have higher rates of accidents, so their auto insurance base rates are typically higher Read More»
