“He is, by any measure, unqualified to make decisions about science, space, and technology.”

Bill Nye

He’s discussing Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), who is known for two things:

  1. Asserting that evolution and the Big Bang theory are “all lies straight from the pit of Hell.”
  2. Serving on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Can’t change #1, but I think we should change #2.

“Georgia congressman Paul Broun claimed after Tuesday’s State of the Union address that “There are more people killed with baseball bats and hammers than are killed with guns.” Explainer readers may remember Broun as the congressman who believes the Earth is 9,000 years old. What about his hammer and baseball bat claim? He’s wrong again, but he’s getting warmer. According to FBI data, 8,583 people were murdered with firearms in 2011. Only 496 people were killed by blunt objects, a category that includes not just hammers and baseball bats but crowbars, rocks, paving stones, statuettes, and electric guitars. Broun was off by a factor of at least 17 this time, a significant improvement on his estimate of the age of the Earth. The blue planet is 4.54 billion years old, or more than 500,000 times older than Broun believes it to be.”

Congressman Doesn't Support 'Sex Changes' Because He 'Likes Being a Boy'

Rep. Broun, a medical doctor, talks about gender transition surgery during an economic talk at a local town hall meeting.

BY MICHELLE GARCIA

A House Republican said he did not think that the Affordable Care Act should not cover procedures like gender transition surgery because he “likes being a boy.”

“I don’t want to pay for a sex change operation,” Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia said at a town hall meeting, according to theBarrow County News. “I’m not interested. I like being a boy.”

Broun, who is a medical doctor, was likely referring to a proposal by the Obama Administration to provide gender transition therapy to transgender people, as prescribed by a doctor. The Affordable Care Act currently does not cover transition surgery, as stated by the Department of Health and Human Services. The statement is similar to Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss, also of Georgia, who rationalized his opposition to marriage equality with this statement: “I’m not gay. So I’m not going to marry one.”

“If you truly don't understand or accept the basic tenets of modern science, I find it difficult to see how you could be making basic judgments about science policy.”

Bill Nye: Paul Broun 'Unqualified To Make Decisions About Science, Space, And Technology'

huffingtonpost.com

For someone who sits on a key congressional science advisory committee, Rep. Paul C. Broun (R-Ga.) seems to take a pretty dim view of science.

In videotaped remarks made Sept. 27 before a church group, Broun called what he had been taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang theory ”all lies straight from the pit of hell,” adding that the lies were intended to “keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior.”

The remarks seemed to resonate with the audience, with several voices calling out their assent. But along with many others who viewed the video, the well-known science educator Bill Nye heaped scorn on Broun, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

As much as creationists want to make it one, the theory of evolution simply is not a controversial topic.  Why isn’t there an outcry from the Republican Party itself condemning this kind of stupidity?

This should not have to come from Bill Nye.  This should not have to come from liberals or Democrats.  This should, quite simply, cause universal and quick action from both parties to quickly remove this man from the House Science committee.

And the fact that it doesn’t…the fact that his fellow conservatives or Republican legislators do not immediately condemn this man’s statements…  How do I say it?  How can I possibly support a political party that would allow a man like this to make decisions about science?

“The thing is, when someone is overextended and broke, they don’t continue paying for expensive automobiles; they sell the expensive automobiles and buy a cheaper one. They don’t continue paying for country club dues, they drop out of the country club.”

—Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), displaying today how he’s completely out of touch with the other 98% of Americans. Total shocker: He’s a member of the Tea Party Caucus.
