A lot of young people say that their favorite part of the mass is holding the hand of their crush during the Our Father.

I can see why you’d be excited, but…

  1. You’re not actually supposed to hold hands during the Our Father. I used to, and I think it’s okay in some cases (i.e. married couples), but if it serves as a distraction, it’s not exactly appropriate.
  2. It leads to focusing on the complete wrong thing. If you’re holding the hand of somebody you like, you’re obviously not going to be focusing on the beautiful words of the prayer; the prayer in which we pray in the words our Savior gave us. Saint Theresa of Avila got so emotional toward the beauty of the prayer that she couldn’t get past the word “Father” without tearing up.
  3. The highlight of the mass is the REPRESENTATION OF THE INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHARIST. In this time we are taken up into Heaven, we are receiving the most amazing, beautiful thing in the world into our very being. THAT is the highlight of the mass. It is what the mass is centered around.

Sorry to kill the fun, hold hands with your crush some other time!

Our Father, who art in Heaven

Hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done

On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

"Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven..."

“…but not what I want, but what You want.”
