It’s the bicentennial celebration of Hampton Road’s history of the War of 1812! OpSail is basically like one massive party on the water. Hampton Roads’ culture is centered around the water (we have the largest naval base on the east coast, and many of the locals make their living either harvesting sea food from the rivers/ocean, piloting massive cargo ships, or serving in the navy). So naturally, OpSail is kind of a big deal around here! Plus, with Norfolk’s Harborfest kicking off this weekend, now would be a great time to visit Virginia’s east coast! There’s expected to be 22 tall ships (think of huge 19th century sailboats) from all around the world pulling into Norfolk tomorrow, aka The Parade of Sails, along with everyone else with a boat. There will also be American reenactors at Fort Norfolk. As a huge history nerd, I am so very excited!
