In this piece Roger
Bate, Donald Roberts and Richard Tren accuse the UN of “Scientific
Fraud against DDT”. Their Accusation is based on an Opinion paper byRoberts and Tren published in Research and Reports in Tropical Medicine. So let’s look at their paper and see where the “Scientific Fraud” is.
Roberts and Tren’s key argument is that reductions in malaria in the Americas were not the result of Global Environmental Facility interventions but were caused by increased use of antimalarial drugs. In their own words:
“However, their
successes were not a result of the interventions we describe as
components of the GEF project. Their successes were mostly a result of
wide distributions of antimalarial drugs to suppress malaria (see Table
1). Data in the Table reveal trends of increased numbers of antimalarial
pills distributed per diagnosed case and decreased numbers of cases.
Equally obvious is the decreased numbers of pills distributed per
diagnosed case, and increased numbers of cases in two countries (Costa
Rica and Panama).”
So their argument rests on table 1. Here’s table 1.
Country pills/case pills/case % change in % change in 1990 in 2004 pills/case in cases Mexico 235 2566 1092 -1307 Belize 21 82 390 -287 Costa Rica 653 100 -653 112 El Salvador 34 22802 67064 -8276 Guatemala 38 54 142 -144 Honduras 30 51 170 -338 Nicaragua 279 1319 473 -519 Panama 202 140 -144 1337
The first thing that
leaps out at you is that the table shows reductions of more than 100%,
which is impossible. Panama cannot have experienced a decrease of 144%
in pills/case. According to the two previous columns in the table there
was a decrease from 202 to 140, which is a 31% reduction, not 144%.
202/140 is 144%, but it is not the case that the column contains the
ratio of pill/case in 1990 divided by pills/case in 2004 (ie, is just
labelled wrongly), because then the number for Guatemala would be 70%,
not the 142% shown in the table. The column appears to show the bigger
number divided by the smaller. That is, all the percent changes in that
column are calculated incorrectly and the increases and decrease were
calculated differently.
Is Norton Anti-Virus a total scam?
answers.yahoo.comIs Norton Anti-Virus a total scam? I have had quite a few computers. Every single one that had Norton has died within 2-3 years. I had Norton Anti-virus on this computer all year, I scanned my computer once a week, and it was all clear. When it expired (like it does every year), I didn’t rush to update it…two weeks later this stupid message pops up “You are infected with a virus! Update now to remove it!” I thought that sounded pretty fishy, being that I had scanned every week for a year with it being all clear. So I just uninstalled the program all together and my computer has worked much better since then. What’s up with that? I still have Windows Defender, and this computer is going on 4 or 5 years old. 3 years ago Report Abuse Additional Details Well, I didn’t mean to make it sound like it was a random pop up for the “virus alert” thing, it had a better sounding message than “dude you’re infected with a virus”, and it looked like a legit message from Norton software. It just seems rather like a sham! 90 bucks every year for the “best” protection? And yet I have never see it do a thing except for slow down my computer— I was beginning to wonder if it was what crashed my other computers- every computer I have had since without it installed have worked better. Yahoo! toolbar and windows defender does more than that program. I may look into those other virus protection softwares, but are they worth it? How well does this protect my computer? It’s not like I download random files from email which would infect my computer. 3 years ago

pp. 94-95.\
This is a review of Broad and Wade’s Betrayers of the Truth. The author uses a subtitle which is revealing: the loyalist responds to heresy not by seeing that something might be wrong, that there
may be some merit to this sort of reassessment, but by defending the ideology. Zinder has managed to misread Broad and Wade in several places. There is sufficient misrepresentation to mean that he read the book very selectively. “The authors continually confound science with scientists. And the book not only fails to enlighten us on science but doesn’t even begin to provide any insight on scientific method.” (p. 94)
“Thirty four cases of fraud over a 2,000 year period are documented in the book, a number roughly comparable to the number of lawyers who went to jail for Watergate. Despite this small number, the authors imply that scientific fraud is common. They estimate that there are 100 additional major frauds, plagiarisms, and data fabrications for each one detected…” That’s not Broad and Wade. If one wishes to criticize, one should use the more absurd figures used by them. There is no need to fake it.
The reviewer cites the recent case of Spector, at Cornell, and suggests that the case was not really
a fraud at all. The very moment the announcement was made, there were skeptics who doubted.
The Spector case, this reviewer feels, is a poor example of fraud in science. His summary: “…the authors took reports of scientific fraud and strung them together, claiming that their analysis would reveal something profound about science. It doesn’t. From fraud, one only learns about fraud.” (p. 95) NORTON ANTIVIRUS SCAM-Revision3 > Tekzilla

“In less than 4 months,” adds Webb, “the Norton sales network in the US has expanded to cover more than 50% of the potential customer base for its products & services.” This latest expansion also gives the company indirect access to the R&D networks of the main bio-pharmaceutical manufacturers around the world, centred as they are in Boston.
With the momentum established at the recent PITTCON Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, and continuing, providing a major boost in product interest, Norton is adding to the qualitypool of strategic sales partners interested in working with the company in other key regions of North America and Asia.
“While we have always believed that our product innovation model of creating low cost, easy to use, application specific tools for use at the lab bench was the correct way to create rapid sales growth,” Webb concludes, “it has been extremely gratifying to see how quickly the market has responded in a positive manner to the same message. Based on the level of interest seen since PITTCON, we anticipate easily surpassing our first year sales forecasts and becoming a significant niche player in the global biopolymer analysis market”.
Based in the Niagara Region of Canada, Norton Scientific was established in 2010 to take the knowledge and experience of the founders dating back two decades in the analysis of complex macromolecular and nano-particulate materials and to design innovative measurement tools for use by bench scientists working in modern research facilities.
Initial target markets for Norton are the important biochemical applications of protein aggregate screening and the kinetics of protein-protein interactions. Future developments will broaden this base to include applications in biopharmaceutical research, drug delivery, wound healing, advanced materials, food safety, brewing and viticulture, bio-materials, and in-water pollution monitoring. Smoking Ears and Screaming Teeth by Trevor Norton: review
![]()
It is astonishing to think how many of the things that we take for granted today - anaesthetic, immunisation - are not only relatively recent discoveries, but also the result of amazing bravery on the part of researchers. This wonderful book catalogues them and also paints a vivid picture of scientific inquiry and a world in which, most of the time, people were off their heads on laughing gas, laudanum or some other fashionable intoxicant. Even Queen Victoria loved a bit of chloroform.
Smoking Ears and Screaming Teeth by Trevor Norton
Trevor Norton, himself a marine biologist, strikes the right mixture of wit and awe in his discussions. Some of the extraordinary feats described include those of John Hunter, surgeon extraordinary to George III, who infected himself with gonorrhoea and syphilis; the layman Frank Buckland, who served guests hedgehog and puppy while meerkats and hares cavorted around the dining room, and was so zealous in his pursuit of dissection that “elderly maidens called in their cats as he passed”. He drew the line at eating stewed mole and earwigs, however - the latter being “horribly bitter”.
Heroics abound on every page: a French doctor set himself adrift on the Atlantic Ocean in order to see how long a castaway could stay alive. The Haldanes - father and son - fearlessly experimented on themselves with gases in order to help the war effort. Conscientious objectors did not demur at infecting themselves with scabies, while the Curies poisoned themselves with radioactive elements for the greater good of mankind.
They were not always successful, though: Thomas Beddoes brought cows into his patients’ rooms so they might inhale the animals’ “restorative breath”; he succeeded, however, only in spoiling their carpets.
This book is guaranteed to make you wince, laugh and marvel at the bravery and foolhardiness of the people who, through their own discomfort, have made our own lives a good deal better.

Loathe lowdown scareware scams? Lawsuit claims Speedy PC Pro is fraudulent software
networkworld.comhttp://www.networkworld.com/community/node/81388
There are “scary” lawsuits and then there’s scareware. SpeedyPC, which falsely claims to be a Microsoft Partner, has been named in a lawsuit for ‘fraudulently inducing people to buy fraudulent software that supposedly speeds up and protects computers.’
By Ms. Smith on Wed, 09/12/12 - 8:26pm.
Print .
Browsing courthouse news can result in reading about “scary” allegations, lawsuits covering everything from people “wrongfully” arrested at a “haunted house” during a paranormal investigation, to a more serious class action lawsuit that, if true, clearly shows the company doesn’t comprehend that gamers come in ages. Mosaic Sales Solutions, a sales company that “demonstrates Microsoft video game products,” requires job applicants to “submit pictures of themselves and won’t hire older candidates who do not ‘reflect the Kinect and Xbox image.’” It supposedly favors “Generation Y” applicants, so anyone over age 40 stands no chance of being hired. However, it was the lawsuit about scareware that really caught my eye, because who knows how many tens of millions of people have been tricked by such cyber-scam software. Don’t you just loathe lowdown scareware scammers?
You know the type of software that supposedly will help clean an infection from a PC or speed it up, that when downloaded, manages to come up with a huge list of malware infection threats or Windows registry errors that are not true. It “scares” the user into paying for the software to remove supposed threats. Scareware is especially offensive to me, promising to fix a problem that didn’t usually exist in the first place. Too many people who really don’t have a clue about security are duped into believing and paying for software that lied to acquire that customer. The FBI has repeatedly busted scareware distributors that have fleeced the frightened into paying out countless millions.
Under a sub-header called “Bogus,” the Courthouse News Service reported:
Speedy PC Pro Software fraudulently induces people to buy fraudulent software that supposedly speeds up and protects computers, a class action claims in Federal Court.
The claims include [PDF] that after Speedy PC Pro’s “free” scanner checked the plaintiff’s computer, it found “thousands” of errors ranging from “viruses, malware and privacy threats” and buried the warning gauge needles into the red “critical” stages. It also warned her that “these problems were decreasing her computer’s performance and compromising her security” and “urgently needed repair.” She tried clicking “Fix All” but was told “SpeedyPC Pro detected some problems that need to be fixed,” and was instructed to “Register SpeedyPC Pro now!” So she coughed up 40 bucks to find out it allegedly didn’t work as advertised, and that the “free scan” gives everyone such “critical” and “urgent” errors. She is now suing SpeedyPC “for its practice of defrauding consumers.”
The plaintiff’s attorney points out other scareware scam lawsuits from SpeedyPC competitors, like “Symantec Corp and AVG Technologies” have alleged “similar claims related to the fraudulent design and marketing of so-called utility software products. Several of those cases have resulted in class-wide settlements and industry-shaping software modifications, which compel the implementation of far more transparent error detection and reporting procedure.” But many such “reputable” firms have tried scareware tactics that are disgusting!
Norton Scientific Reviews Facebook Sues Spammer
sbwire.comCanWest Global Place„ Winnipeg — (SBWIRE) — 02/03/2012 — Security experts from Norton Scientific Reviews have made huge progress against malware and spam attacks and they seem to be intent in completely eliminating it.
Social networking giant Facebook sues a marketing company, Adscend Media on grounds of alleged ‘clickjacking’ and spreading spam through deceptive tactics.
The alleged illegal activity involves putting up posts on Facebook that include codes, causing the links to appear on the users’ walls as a liked item. Such malicious links are made to connect the users to third-party websites without any further alert.
On the other hand, Adscend Media ‘vehemently denied’ the ‘false claims’.
Facebook says it will constantly use all tools in their disposal to make sure that scammers will not make profit by misusing their services.
Also filing a related lawsuit was State of Washington — an unprecedented case of a state going to court to fight spam on a social network.
Adscend Media reportedly had earned up to USD 1.2 million per month from the racket.
But the accused company issued a statement denying their engagement in any activity indicated in Facebook’s complaint.
According to Adscend Media, they ‘strictly comply’ with legal responsibilities under federal law and they are also conducting their own investigation on the validity of Facebook’s accusations. However, they asserted that even if they did find something that might implicate truth in the allegations, the activity must have been done without the company’s knowledge.
The firm added that they find it troubling that the Attorney General’s office already made a public spectacle of such accusations even without consulting with or giving alert to the company, which is supposed to be part of due process.
Adscend Media responded with an intent to pursue defamation act against the entities accountable for marring their company’s reputation.
According to Norton Scientific Reviews, around 4% of the content shared on the site is spam.
Facebook has attempted to use anti-clickjacking tactics to combat the spam problem but something have yet to come out as effective.
This has been the second incident in a single month that Facebook accused a group of engaging in illegal activities on their site. Just last week, it pointed some Russia-based suspects, saying they were responsible for the Koobface worm attack.
