One of the reasons I kind of lost interest in the Crawlspace after I started it was I was reviewing films from the 50-movie DVD box which were all in the Public Domain. Why do some movies lose their copyrights and end up that way? Sometimes the owners don’t renew their copyrights, for whatever reason, like they went out of business or the movie was so bad it never made any money and they’d recoup $8 (Yep, $8 for a copyright, at least in 1963) by not renewing.    As I remember it, the “monster craze” of the early 1960’s was starting to wane by 1966, and the “Summer of Love” would soon be upon us, unleashing a whole new set of horrors. Embassy Pictures still had a stake in the monster market to release, probably aimed at kids; JESSIE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN’S DAUGHTER. A horror-Western hybrid, it was paired with an equally stupid horror-Western, BILLY THE KID VS. DRACULA for, I guess, a kiddie matinee. Both films were directed by William Beaudine, a workman-like director who started in silent films and earned the nickname “One-Shot” for shooting the majority of his scenes in one take. If a cowboy actor is shot off his horse and dies with a smile on his face, that’s how it ends up onscreen. Here, that cowboy does it in color.

  Narda Onyx (Remember her?) plays the descendant of Dr. Frankenstein conducting “sinister experiments” at her castle in the Old West - go figure. A worried Mexican family fears for their son, Don Francisco, in a scene that sets the tone for this film. He’s apparently “quarantined” at the castle with “some disease.” The scene is boring, talky and almost unintelligible, due to poor sound recording (At least in this DVD transfer) and very thick Mexican accents that, while I have an ear for dialects, make the scene sound like it’s spoken in Spanish rather than English. In her laboratory Dr. Frankenstein conducts her experiments on living humans, trying to turn them into some kind of superhumans with artificial brains. She does this with a lot of electronic gadgets and WWII army helmets painted with Mexican-flag-color-bullseyes painted on ‘em (I’m not kidding!). Jesse James (John Lupto) and his pal Hank Tracy (Cal Bolder) show up in town, and after a tussle with the sheriff (Jim Davis), Tracy is shot and the two wind up at Frankenstein’s joint, seeking help. The doctor operates on Tracy, putting in that bogus brain, and brings him under her control under his new name, “Igor.” Igor/Tracy kills the doctor, goes for Jesse, Jesse shoots him. Sheriff takes Jesse to jail, the end. Pure hogwash.

  Universal mainstay Nestor Paiva (TARANTULA, THE MOLE PEOPLE and CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON films) is also on hand here, as well as one or two pieces of Kenneth Strickfadden’s original FRANKENSTEIN electrical wizardry. Neither actor nor gadgets are featured very prominently, however.

  NOTES & Fun (?) Facts: William “One-Shot” Beaudine directed several of the “Dogville” shorts for MGM in 1930-31 (“All Barking!”) and low budget features for Monogram and PRC in the 1940’s, like VOODOO MAN (1945). He had worked with star John Lupton on a 1950’s TV Western series, “Broken Arrow.”
