Warner Music Group to Look at Offers This Week

Warner Music Group’s board of directors is said to be reviewing bids for the company this week. 10 investors have already put in bids prior to the review. Among the investors planning to buy all or part of WMG is ticketing agency Live Nation. Warner has been up for sale since January, and has yet find it’s new ownership.

What is yet to be seen is how the different potential owners will affect the company and its ultimate fate and direction. Live Nation could do interesting things with the group, but some of the more private investors may be unable to cause any necessary changes to the company.

10 Years of Change in Ten Seconds

IF your wondering just how much the music industry has changed over the last decade, this graphic should definitely help clear things up.

@FallOutBoy Debuts At No. 1 On @Billboard 200

As for Paramore, its self-titled album tumbles from No. 1 to No. 12 in its second week, moving 27,000 copies with a 74% drop in sales. It’s the second No. 1-debuting album to fall straight out of the top 10 in its second week this year. Previously, Chris Tomlin’s Burning Lights collapsed 1-22 on the Feb. 2 chart.

Ouch!

Back inside the top 10 this week, Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience is steady at No. 3 (76,000; down 22%)

JT’s showing he might actually have long term, steady success w/ this album.  76K one month later might connote folks are telling their friends about it.

Record Companies Sell Furniture

image

As a collector, DJ, and music industry bee, I’ve many times thought about the current conundrum: Is the record biz doomed? From the glamorous heights and insane profits of the last 60 years? I believe so. While most musicians and artists lament the ability to sell a physical product, like a record, tape, or CD, it’s important to look further back.

Record companies didn’t start out selling music. They sold furniture. The gramophone. Music was the way they got you to put one in the living room. The good people at Dangerous Minds reminded me of this, with an interview from 1993 of Phil Alvin, the lead singer and guitarist of The Blasters. His interview, and more digging through the crates of this dusty mind are after the cut.

Story of the Week: Myspace and Myspace Music, Layoffs and the Dying Trend

As it continues to lose it’s former power over the internet, social network Myspace seems to now be in a downward spiral. A layoff letter, which some say was rather insensitive, was sent to 500 employees this past week. It is said that another 500 employees are to be laid off soon.

Myspace Music still remains to be a home for local artists to keep their fan bases up to date on their work. However, with the future of Myspace seemingly not promising, who knows what will happen. But regardless of the questionable failure of Myspace, local artists will still have plenty of ways to reach out to their fans. The social network in terms of music, is quite large, and perhaps it is time for a new medium to take the Internet’s free music marketing throne. Unless someone already has…..YouTube? Facebook?

Check out the letter that MySpace employees got when they were told they were fired.

Yeah, we’re all about a nice clean break over at MySpace.

It's Better In the Cloud...So They Say

image

Do people really want to pay a monthly fee to store their music on an external hard drive? Probably not. But Amazon is giving it a go, releasing its Cloud Music Player yesterday. You can see the convenience in being able to access your music collection anywhere. (I spent $250 on an iPod for that very reason!) All this cloud computing talk is for geeks, not the general consumer.

The cloud player idea has been floating around for a while now. Apple and Google supposedly have their own versions dropping soon. The major record labels are grinding their teeth and white knuckling their lawyers as they try to figure out a way to charge licensing fees on copyright. All Things D has more info on the legal quandary.

We're All In The Same Boat

I have recently began to get myself into a routine, I’ve been meaning to for ages but have only just recently started to take action.

So far in my routine

So far i have one thing locked into my daily routine and that is that every morning i wake up around 8-9am, open my computer (i know its not great for my eyes), log into my Google Reader and sift through the daily feeds from about 80 different blogs and websites (with that list of blogs and websites always growing).

Why?

Well for two reasons really, the first is because i want to know and learn this stuff.

The way i see it this is my industry and in order to grow and innovative within it, i need to learn it. I need to know whats current, works worked in the past and whats working and interesting now so that i can be in the best position to predict what will happen in the future.

… and Secondly, because as MusoMecca is all about empowering independent music artists, i feel that its my duty to pass it on to you guys, so i take these feeds and post them to twitter.

On twitter we have two main accounts:

1. @MusoMecca - Where i post all of these daily music marketing and fan engagement tips and

2. @MusoMeccaNews - Which is where i post all of the daily music industry news.

I do this for the same reason i read these feeds every morning, because we need to know and be learning the same things.

We’re all in the same boat.

All the engagement tips that i post up on engagement.musomecca.com i try to put into practice myself to engage with you guys, the same way you can use them to engage with your followers.

Now to make it easier for you guys to get access to this vital information i have collated them into two neat web pages:

1. engagement.musomecca.com and

2. news.musomecca.com

These can be found on the website www.musomecca.com under the tab ‘DAILY News + Tips’.

I hope you get as much out of these feeds as i do, because i have learnt a hell of a lot since i have been reading them!

If you have any comments or thoughts on the matter, please just get in touch with me as well.

Thanks for reading!
