WWII Blackouts
During World War II, it was possible to get the best look yet at the Andromeda galaxy. The reason: Los Angeles was blacked out at the time, making it possible for the hundred-inch Mt. Wilson telescope near L.A. to be employed to maximum advantage through the fully darkened skies.
