MonogoldMonogold — “Spirit or Something”

Up-tempo Brooklyn-hailing trio called Monogold, dropped a catchy tune by and it just made me wanna jump into a ravine only to grab a vine and swing to the ground as I pretend to be chased by some sort of anti-environmentalist. I’m not really sure though.

After giving this album some love this weekend, I had to share. Monogold has already recieved a bunch of love around the blogosphere, and it’s for a very good reason. The Brooklyn based band have such a welcoming sound. I found myself putting it on a lot during the weekend, whether I was doing stuff around the house, sitting with friends, or just sitting and listening myself. It seemed to span a huge gap of listening experiences, which is hard to come by.
You can buy their new album The Softest Glow at their bandcamp. Well worth it. And look for them at SXSW as well!

A Little Background
Monogold is a three piece hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Their DIY approach to music has enabled them to self record and produce their own sound in their personal studio. Their most recent release and first full-length album is 2011’s The Softest Glow. Their 2009 EP, We Animals, continues to receive rave reviews from blogs and magazines throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Last year The Wall Street Journal chose Monogold as a band to see at CMJ, saying, “…bassist Mike Falotico and drummer Jared Apuzzo build rhythmic foundations for guitarist-vocalist Keith Kelly to inhabit with his reverberative falsetto and ringing, euphonic chords. Monogold crafts six-string dreamscapes.”
Their latest album, The Softest Glow has been on constant play around the office it’s an easy and at most points upbeat, sometimes haunting listen from start to finish. Favorite tracks include “Spirit or Something” and “Feel Animal”. As an interesting side note the album art seen above was originally a four foot painting that band member, Keith painted and then photographed to use as the album cover. I would totally hang that anywhere in my domain. Hey Keith, save some talent for the rest of us!
1. How would you describe your sound and what are your influences?
Our sound seems to come from some eclectic influences. Anything from the 50s 60s surf sound ( The Shadows) to the sparse, rhythmic influence of the Talking Heads.
2. What are some songs or artists you are really in to right now?
On the last tour we were on there was a lot of the new Sharon Van Etten, Beach House, Liars, Ruby Suns being listened to.
3. When you’re not playing music what do you like to do?
When not playing music I (Keith) paint a lot, Jared has his own recording studio, and of course we all dabble in the service industry bartending etc, strictly for the love of it of course.

Easily one of my favorite tracks of 2011 courtesy of Brooklyn’s Monogold. This track even made it onto GITNB’s Summer Sess Mixtape that’s featured on 8tracks iPhone app right now. Well the boys went out and made a fantastic lil’ video for “Spirit or Something,” using live footage from their August 29th The Loft Show footage. Makes me want to live at SXSW forever. Fans of Fool’s Gold and Tanlines will love these guys.
