Moments in the Woods

Audra McDonald

And here we go, starting off the night with thanks to Stephen Sondheim for making Audra McDonald sing something that is NOT by the Witch in Into the Woods: she singing Moments in the Woods tonight.

If Les Misérables is my first and most obsessive musical fandom, Into the Woods is my favourite musical. Does that make sense?

“Any Moment / Moments In The Woods” || Into The Woods

Foolishness can happen in the woods
(Once again, please!)
Let your hesitations be hushed…
Any moment, big or small,
Is a moment, after all;
Seize the moment, skies may fall
Any moment.

Moments in the Woods” from Into the Woods (1988 National Tour)

performance Mary Gordon Murray

As you may have noticed, I’ve been enjoying an audio from the 1988 National Tour of Into the Woods.  My initial interest was in hearing Cleo Laine and Charlotte Rae as The Witch and Jack’s Mother respectively.  There were also a few other familiar names: Chuck Wagner (this time as Cinderella’s Prince), Douglas Sills as Rapunzel’s Prince, and Nora Mae Lyng as Cinderella’s Mother/Grandmother/The Giant.  To my delight, the cast members I have not heard of are, across the board, excellent, particularly Mary Gordon Murray’s The Baker’s Wife.  She apparently had played Gussie the James Lapine Merrily at La Jolla (alongside John Rubenstein, Chip Zien, Heather MacRae and Marin Mazzie)!  Don’t you wish YOU were one of the cool kids club that did multiple musicals with James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim (and sometimes William Finn) and in the 80s and early 90s?

Moments in the Woods | Into the Woods (cover)

A great musical. VERY difficult music. Heard Audra McDonald sing this live and fell deeper in love with this song.

Is it always "or"? Is it never "and"?

Just remembering you’ve had an “and” when you’re back to “or” makes the “or” mean more than it did before.

Any time anyone says "This is ridiculous!"...

…I immediately think “What am I doing here? I’m in the wrong story!”

Every. Time.
