As a business planning and strategy professional with nearly three decades of technology-focused experience, I am interested to see an acceleration of trends toward mobile advertising and marketing. Experts predict that by 2014, 50 percent of all Internet use will occur in the mobile sphere, whether through smartphone or tablet PC. Corporate advertising efforts geared toward mobile users do not currently reflect the extent of this shift, with mobile marketing campaigns making up less than five percent of many companies’ total advertising budgets. Clearly there is opportunity for significant growth in this area over the next several years. Firms that make the decision to expand their mobile advertising efforts now may achieve distinct first-mover benefits.
One intense area of current startup activity involves the development of geo-location applications, which utilize GPS technologies in creating advertising tailored to the exact location of the mobile user. Popular geo-location based options already exist; prominent among them is the social networking site Foursquare. The program allows smartphone users to “check-in” at certain venues, earning points and badges, and even becoming the “mayor” of a location. Foursquare’s advertising potential lies in the fact that it effectively points users toward certain geographical locations and activities. Recent corporate tie-ups with Foursquare involve the New York Times, the History Channel, and Bravo TV.
Another geo-location approach is being pioneered through apps such as Brightkite, which utilize location, time, and behavior-based parameters in delivering targeted advertising offers. The iPhone app GateGuru entices visitors passing through an airport with discount offers for a particular restaurant or service within the terminal. Conversion rates of mobile-ad recipients to walk-in customers have been as high as 20 percent, which indicates a high potential for geographically oriented approaches. Unfortunately, there is not yet a critical mass of smartphone users, but the distinct advantages the technology offers places it prominently in marketing professionals’ sights.

Text Message Marketing Drives Auto Accessory Sales for Auto Accessory Warehouse
Auto Accessory Warehouse has found success with text message marketing to its opt-in database of previous customers. Its initial text message marketing promotion resulted in an astonishing 2800% ROI.
Mike Kazi is the owner of Auto Accessory Warehouse. Kazi was looking for a new medium of advertising given that his print media and radio advertising were not generating the kind of results recently that he had hoped. He found that advertising jewel with text message marketing and chose to work with text message marketing company 84444.com.
Auto Accessory Warehouse did a broadcast text message program to its opt-in database of about 4400 customers. The initial offer was for a special window tinting service. Kazi wasn’t sure that his Fall promotion would be successful since window tinting is usually a product that is purchased in the Spring and Summer, but he went ahead with it anyway.
The text message promotion resulted in over 20 sales of the window tinting special. Many customers also made other purchases in addition to the window tinting. Auto Accessory Warehouse’s final sales were over $5000 directly from the text message promotion. His investment to send the text messages was a mere $175.
“We sent out our first broadcast and our phones were just ringing off the hook,” said Kazi. “They came for other stuff too like wheels and tires. We even sold somebody an Alpine navigation system.”
Not surprisingly, Kazi and Auto Accessory Warehouse are hooked. It plans to continue to use text message marketing for special offers about once or twice per month. It also plans to offer non-selling automotive tips to its customers since most of his customers are passionate about cars. Kazi recognizes that for text message marketing to be effective it must be used prudently since customers can opt-out of his text message alerts at any time.
Auto Accessory Warehouse is also planning to expand into other forms of mobile marketing and is considering developing an app, a mobile web site, and using QR Codes, but text message marketing will likely continue to be at the core of its promotions.
“I don’t know if there’s a better way to get a message across,” said Kazi, “because everybody is using cell phones these days.”

It has been in business since 1999 and is located at 327 East Redlands Blvd. in San Bernardino.

As a side note I have to mention the study from Chitika* because you may end in a platform choice (without going into the HTML5 vs. Native apps discussion) when you are looking at expanding your business into the mobile space. Chitika found that Android users is 80% more valuable then iPhone users.

Jum’at ini hari jum’at yang sangat sepi. Tengok kanan tengok kiri di jalan, ngga begitu padat jalanan. Terang saja hari ini hari kejepit. Pada umumnya orang menyebut Hari Kejepit Nasional. Fenomena harpitnas ini memang telah menasional. Dimana ada keputusan pemerintah mengenai cuti bersama. Wah seru banget yah, bisa ngumpul bersama keluarga. Tapi nasib saya berbicara lain, terang saja saya hanya bekerja di perusahaan swasta di komplek perkantoran Jakarta Selatan. Meskipun umumnya libur, kantor saya tetap masuk kerja. Tanpa ngeluh dan tanpa malas-malasan saya pun berangkat kerja. Tapi sesampainya di kantor, cukup mengejutkan juga ternyata. Dari sekian puluh karyawan, yang masuk hanya 6 orang. Angka yang sangat luar biasa. Tugas demi tugas saya kerjakan seperti biasa sekalipun ngga ada teman yang bisa diajak ngobrol. Karena ngga ada becanda ini dan itu, jam segini udah kelar. Tinggal saya kirim aja daily reportnya. Sambil mengisi waktu buat menunggu waktu pulang, mungkin alangkah baiknya update blog. Update wapsite lagi.
