“Conservatives cannot govern well for the same reason that vegetarians cannot prepare a world-class boeuf bourguignon: If you believe that what you are called upon to do is wrong, you are unlikely to do it very well.”
—political scientist Michael Wolfe, quoted in Naomi Klein’s The Shock Doctrine (2007)What do these three things have in common?
“Tesla. Instead of just building batteries and selling them to Detroit, we are going to build our own cars from scratch plus own the distribution network. During a recession and a cleantech backlash.”
“Mint. Give us all of your bank, brokerage, and credit card information. We’ll give it back to you with nice fonts. To make you feel richer, we’ll make them green.”
“Dropbox. We are going to build a file sharing and syncing solution when the market has a dozen of them that no one uses, supported by big companies like Microsoft. It will only do one thing well, and you’ll have to move all of your content to use it.”
Press Release: Renowned author, filmmaker Michael Wolfe to host Bay Area premiere of new documentary "Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World" at The Tech Museum
SAN JOSE, SILICON VALLEY, Calif., - Michael Wolfe wouldn’t be the first person you’d think would convert to Islam. You see, his father is Jewish. His mom, Christian. But Wolfe didn’t stop there. Today he’s one of Islam’s biggest proponents in the West.
And he’s headed to The Tech Museum Sunday, January 29 to help shine a very bright light on a religion increasingly perceived as deceivingly dark. Wolfe, poet, author, and President and Executive Producer of Unity Productions Foundation, will host the Bay Area premiere of his new film Islamic Art: Mirror of the Invisible World, an epic journey across nine countries and over 1,400 years of history.
“American Muslims are just emerging from a terrible period of stereotyping based on fear rather than facts,” said Wolfe, a frequent lecturer on Islamic issues at universities across the United States including Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, SUNY Buffalo, and Princeton. “It seems a shame that many people remain convinced that all Islam has provided the world in the last 60 years is Al-Qaeda.”
The 95-minute film presents viewers with several themes representing the art and architecture of the Islamic World. Narrated by Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon, the film was three years in the making. For the trailer, click:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6sPN8Gixmk
Wolfe co-founded the Unity Productions Foundation, through which he produces films and spreads the message about the importance of portraying Muslims accurately in the entertainment and media industry. With UPF’s film
series, much as he has done with his writings, Wolfe hopes to change American perceptions of Islam.
In addition to authoring several books on the subject, Wolfe is best known for his Emmy-nominated special in which he took viewers of ABC News Nightline on a first-person account of The Hajj, a sacred pilgrimage required at least once for all practicing Muslims. Wolfe gained unprecedented access, becoming the first journalist to take cameras inside the important pillar of Islam.
Guests are invited to enjoy the free exhibition Ingenious Innovations: Islamic Science Rediscovered from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Screening starts at 3:00 p.m. (The film will be shown in New Venture Hall.
Members pay $5; non-members $10)

“How easily many Americans forget that their own democracy did not emerge full-grown without a struggle. In fact, American democracy developed slowly over many decades, a product of give and take and occasional painful conflicts that more than once spilled over into bloodshed and tragedy-- the Civil War, the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for example. Even now, it seems unwise to view democracy and freedom as accomplished facts. Their price remains vigilance." To me, this quote seems even more appropriate in 2012 that it was in 2002. Thoughts?”
—Michael Wolfe. Editor of ‘Taking Back Islam’. p 56 (2002)the first screening!
Tonight, an audience saw my film for the first time. It was by far the most horrifying and exhilarating night I have had in quite some time. And surprisingly enough, I didn’t even need any benzos to help me through it!
I can not convey how hard it is for a filmmaker to experience and survive a night like this. Any filmmaker will tell you. How naked and vulnerable someone feels after spending three years of his life pouring every ounce of their blood, sweat and tears into something they care about so deeply…and then presenting it to an audience for the first time.
But this is a crucial part of the process. One that must occur despite any anxieties or insecurities that exist within myself or anyone else involved with the film. Because our goal is to make a great picture…and everyone that participated in tonight’s screening helped us get one step closer to accomplishing that.
Yes, the film is far from finished. Yes, some portions of it are stronger than others. Yes, there is much work to do. But, according to those who attended, they also had this to say…Yes, the acting is exceptional. Yes, the editing is great. Yes, the production value is tremendous. Yes, the story is a powerful one. And more importantly, Yes, we have something very special on our hands. And this is what will drive me forward.
Because despite all the editing, scoring, sound-mixing and color-correcting that lies before us, I know that we are on the right path…a path that will one day in the foreseeable future, lead us to a very good film…one that we can all be proud of…and one that will hopefully touch people.
So on behalf of myself and the entire production team of “Maybe Tomorrow”…many, many, many, many thanks for your presence and your feedback at this inaugural screening. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
- Michael Wolfe
