Swedish Phrases

theatlantic.com

“Today brought the news that Google has officially objected to one of the best words that has ever graced this planet: ogooglebar, which translates — if such a glorious word must be subjugated to the indignities of translation — to ‘ungoogleable.’”

Bloggbävning, n.
Definition: Literally translating to “blogquake,” the word describes the process by which a topic explodes in the blogosphere and is then picked up by more mainstream media outlets.
Used in an English sentence: “Man, that ‘ogooglebar’ thing really caused a bloggbävning today.”

Köttrymd, n.
Definition: A derivation of the English “meatspace,” the term refers to the entirety of the non-digital world.
Used in an English sentence: “Thanks for reading! Now I’m signing off — going to see what’s going on in Köttrymd.”

I miss you, tumblr.

My teacher gave us two and a half weeks to do 100 drawings. I feel like all I’ve done since Monday is draw. I can’t even remember if I’ve slept or eaten. But none of that matters because I am totally on schedule. Boo-freakin’-yah, y’all. 24 down, 76 to go! That…actually is not very comforting. Also, I had to use the calculator because I cannot be expected to math right now (or ever, really). Like, I looked at the numbers 24 and 100 and no matter how hard I stared, no other correlating number rose from the depths of my tired brain.

So if I am absent from tumblr until November 9th, that is why. And if I arise from this assignment a charcoal covered zombie, deliriously growling things like, “NEED MOAR IDEAS” or “COMPOSITION FAILS BUT I DON’T CARE” before trying to eat you, please mourn me. Well, kill me first and then mourn me.

Tell me if this makes any sense (or, Why This Is Not a 101 Blog and Why I Almost Never Reblog Social Justice Stuff I Otherwise Like)

I care so deeply about feminism (anti-capitalist feminism in particular) that I basically only want to hang out with people I rarely have to talk about it with. Like we can just have fun and support each other, the details of the systems that are getting us down will just been an understood thing, and we’ll occasionally have good talks about new books or personal baggage and we won’t be afraid of correct/comment on each other but basically we will focus on the incredibly subversive act of getting to know each other and making things.

Sometimes when I hang out with feminists who only seem to be able to talk about feminism I get so bored. Cat macros and recipes do not count as a second hobby. But I am the most joy killing feminist ever, so what is that about, Kelsey, huh?

I recognize the irony of making this into a post, yes.

Today I met with my undergrad mentee (who I love) and instead of (well, after) talking about class selection and summer internships, I mentioned New Girl and IT TURNS OUT it’s her favorite show (!) and she’s obsessed with it and she has a Tumblr and talked about having to dodge spoilery Tumblr gifs.  GREATEST.  How rarely do I get to actually have a real world conversation about what’s going on inside my head!

Also she told me about the traumatizing experience she had trying to explain Schmidt’s broken penis to her Japanese roommate.  Haaaa.

During a serious conversation about beards and my feelings wrt the having of them. As I looked at a picture on Tumblr.

  • A: Who is that?
  • Me: Chris Pine. ... but really more like Chris FINE, AMIRITE? HEY-O!
  • (To his credit he actually high-fived me back.)
  • Me: He's the guy who plays Kirk.
  • A, very offended: I know!! Geez!

Turning down the fandom volume

Hey! So …

Some folks here (and elsewhere!) may have noticed I’m not posting/reblogging as much as I used to. There’s a reason for that! Two reasons, actually. I’m still into my various fandoms, definitely, but there are some big meatspace life things that are taking my focus right now, and will continue to do for the foreseeable future.

First, of course, is that I just published my first novel. It’s been a great experience so far, but it did take a lot of work to get prepped to pub, plus being involved in marketing and all that. Now that that one’s out there, I’m also starting prep work on my second, which will also take a lot of bandwidth to get together. That’s assuming I have much available to dedicate to it, because …

I’m about to become a Mama Texty! As some folks know, we’ve been working with an adoption agency for most of the past year, and were finally picked by birthparents last week. We’ve been working out the details/signing paperwork the last several days, and now are just waiting for our son to decide he’s ready to be born. It’s been a very long, hard road to get here—we’ve been trying to become parents for six years, so we’re unbelievably excited. And also doing the headless chicken dance making sure we have everything ready for his homecoming. Chances are very good I won’t even be sleeping much in the next couple of months (at least), so fandom’s definitely going to be taking a back seat for a while for that reason.

I’ll still be around here and there. I love my fandom friends, and you’re a great part of my life. I just may not be as visible and prolific as you’re used to seeing from me. Hopefully, you understand! Most of my posting for the near future is going to be personal stuff on FB, so feel free to ping me there if you like (just send me a PM letting me know what username I might know you under.)

“Real life is a phrase used to distinguish actual events, people, and activities from fictional worlds or characters, from interactions on the Internet, or, pejoratively, from certain lifestyles or activities that the speaker deems less important, worthy, or otherwise "real.”

At the AMC

and will do a write-up later but I just want to say I have met WAY TOO FEW PEOPLE FROM TUMBLR so far.

sure I’ve been hanging out with ihavechortles

like I hear dancingonembers is here

and quixotess

and some very amazing people I would be way too shy to approach *coughcough*liquornspice and so-treu*cough*.

Also there’s probably gonna be a social justice D&D campaign next year or a game jam or a LAN party. Yes, the AMC is slowly turning into a sci fi convention and I kind of like it.

Erik Voorhees: Bitcoin Earned "Meatspace Cred" At PorcFest

blog.bitinstant.com

Free State Project participant and serial bitcoin entrepreneur Erik Voorhees (@ErikVoorhees) reports on how Bitcoin was a big part of this year’s Porcupine Freedom Festival.  Excerpts:

“Dozens of people registered for PorcFest with Bitcoin (myself included), and this set the tone for the whole event. ‘Bitcoin accepted here’ should’ve been the subheading on this year’s program.”
“Bernanke’s Bitcoin Exchange was a fully-functional trade and educational hub, buying and selling Bitcoin for fiat with a spread of 3%, hooking up new people with Bitcoin Spinner and Blockchain.info’s App on their phones, and educating the masses on proper wallet safety.”
“‘We’re actually reconstructing an entire financial system from right here on our laptop with a $50 Verizon Mifi.’ Indeed, we just plugged the largest libertarian camping festival of the year into the global high-tech Bitcoin forex network, and the government hadn’t a clue what was going on.”
“Transacting for physical goods, in a remote corner of New Hampshire’s beautiful wilderness… well, that lent a certain ‘meatspace cred’ that we can’t wait to replicate all over the world.”

Thess vs Derby

In all fairness, it was probably more ‘Thess vs the railway’, ‘Thess vs public transport’ or, most accurately, ‘Thess vs nine o’clock in the fucking morning’, but all the same, I went to Derby to meet @apostates and @apostates-assemble. So basically I spent this afternoon with a pair of charming apostates and it was glorious. They waited for me at the station and everything!

Once again I am reminded how fucking expensive London is compared to everywhere else. Also, I don’t believe that shopping centres are a chain endeavour. Shops, I get being chains; people want a particular thing, shops spring up across the world to supply that thing. But a building whose only job is to house stores that sell things? How the hell is THAT a chain endeavour? It’s basically like being a letting agent.

*ahem* But not the point! (Though I did have a rant about that. Those two can now attest that I do in fact talk like I blog. Although on Tumblr, no one can hear [THAT NOISE]. Which I think only @apostates of the folks I know on Tumblr (with the possible exception of @dontbearuiner, but she’s known me for, like, ever) has actually ever heard. So that was kind of fun. So was the conversation, and the nommage. Y’know. Hanging-out kinda stuff.

Also there was a little crafty-thing swap. The one real drawback to SOAW is that I very rarely get to see the expressions on people’s faces when they first actually smell this stuff. Particularly custom character blends. So it was really fun to watch @apostates sniff things, make noises and then wave them under @apostates-assemble’s nose and watch her eyes widen. Very gratifying, though I’m trying not to imagine that everyone had the same reaction when they opened their envelopes, or will in future. Mostly because I don’t think I’ll ever have quite THAT much confidence.

In return, I got pin badges. One more bit of MCM-related prep done! Woo!

In any case, I had a lovely time and I will have to do that again sometime. Y’know, sometime when I have the time and cash to spare on the ticket. Also I shared my train ride home with this truly adorable Staffordshire bull terrier and had to brave the hellaciousness of Morrisons at 8:40pm to pick up a couple of bits and pieces for Monday, but still, can’t overly complain.

So *hugs* to @apostates and @apostates-assemble; you were wonderful hostesses and I had a really great time.
