Sign upMy thoughts in the shower - Surrealism should be subgenred.
Surrealism is one art movement I really feel has been left out from careful study and scrutiny. Close to all movements have been sub categorized and carefully dissected into specific categories and styles, a good example of this would be cubism and analytical cubism. I’ll stick with this example because, although a (even partially) trained eye can tell the difference from analytical and regular cubism, they are both very distinctly cubism and very close to the same style in general. Where my issue comes in is when looking at surrealism, although again all obviously surrealism, there are at least two very different styles of surrealism.A very bourgeois kind as seen in the styles of artists like Salvador Dali and Max Ernst and then a very abstract and conceptual style like the ones artists like Joan Miro seemed stick to. I am definitely no professional so I wouldn’t even attempt proposing a name for these two styles of surrealism but I strongly feel there is a very blatant difference that has yet to be addressed.
