Lyle Overbay is Delusional
Plenty has been written about Charlie Morton’s decision to completely mimic Roy Halladay’s mechanics and how he is a better pitcher, but the gods of luck would guarantee that Morton would perform better than last season because he certainly couldn’t do any worse.
But Lyle Overbay has stepped in, claiming pure nonsense:
“Charlie’s the spitting image,” said Pirates first baseman Lyle Overbay, formerly Halladay’s teammate in Toronto. “And, to be honest, he’s got better stuff than Roy does. Roy has a better idea where his ball is going because he’s been doing it a lot longer. And the sinker comes out of Charlie’s hand way better.”
Roy Halladay is among the greatest pitchers of his generation, winning two Cy Youngs and leading the league in innings pitched four times. The other is Charlie Morton who posted a 7.57 ERA in 79.2 innings last year. While that number looks much better this season, currently sitting at 3.52, he has a 19/23 K/BB ratio. Among pitchers with a minimum of 20 innings, Morton’s K/BB ratio is the third worst in baseball, behind only Javier Vazquez and Tyler Chatwood.
There’s being a good teammate and there is being completely crazy. Lyle Overbay is crazy.
