“I just had the idea that this character that Sam is clashing with, who is kind of a golden boy, should be called Redford. When I was looking for the actor to play Sam, I found all of these other actors who were wonderful but weren’t right for the part. Lucas Hedges [who plays Redford] is someone who is a very talented actor. After this film, Noah Baumbach actually cast him in a pilot he did, The Corrections. That was a lucky thing that this actor, who I had kind of set aside knowing that I wanted him to have a part in the script, looked like the exact person I’d cast if I was looking for a young Robert Redford.”
