Reasons

You are in love with a shadow
of a man because you think it is
a skeleton, but all you really love 
is the person four feet behind him:
who he was yesterday or the day
before, but not who he is today,
because he does not love you,
but he did, he did, only the way
an outline of a person can,
but a solid sketch never will.

You are in love with a shadow
of a man because the company of
a full one could never quite keep you
satisfied, at least this way you have a
good excuse to trail behind and wait 
for the sun to set and the moon to 
stop hiding behind the clouds.

You are in love with a shadow 
of a man because you know 
a shadow cannot love you in
return, and maybe what you want
is to be fully enveloped in what is
invisible in the light of day; this way
you never have to share him, and
the truth is, you don’t know how.
