“We give money away to a few people at the expense of the many.”—GOP Senator Lindsay Graham • Pushing to close tax loopholes that benefit upper-income earners. While it seems obvious (to most) that we ought to close tax loopholes, Republicans in Congress have, for the most part, resolutely opposed any modification of the tax code that brings in additional revenue. To hear a prominent Republican say something like this is a faint glimmer of hope that maybe—and that’s a big maybe— Republicans will bend a bit on revenues; this could, in turn, translate into a deal to raise the debt-ceiling. Which would be nice. source (via • follow)
On Lindsay Graham, Boston, and the Police State
I find Lindsay Graham to be one of the most terrifying individuals in Congress right now; I thought he was awful with regards to what he said about not Mirandizing Tsarnaev, but encouraging the “enemy combatant” rhetoric worries me even more. But its not necessarily the decision of the Mayor and Governor which frighten me, but the implication that it can happen in ANY city for ANY reason; it was just a day here because they happened to catch the alleged amateur terrorist quickly, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be drawn out elsewhere for more serious reasons.
Lol, CNN is reporting that the federal government is charging him with one count of co-conspiring to use “WMDs” (a kitchen pressure-cooker). I don’t want to imagine what the response might be by a different mayor/governor for completely different reasons; God forbid something happens in New York other than gang violence which draws the attention of Bloomberg and his self-described “private army.” I worry that even the next “mass shooting” could induce a more substantive paramilitary response. Remember when the LAPD used surveillance drones to hunt down Christopher Dorner earlier this year? I believe that had the Boston authorities not caught Tsarnaev on Friday, the possibility of using UAV technology would have increased (some talking heads had already suggested it as early as Tuesday).
I’m just not convinced that these events won’t become more frequent. With people like Lindsay Graham (who continues to gain influence SOMEHOW!? - for example his Facebook page is growing) preaching his intolerance and ignorance from the pulpit, I’m even more worried that I’m in the minority of thought.
