If you said a slur three years ago because you weren’t well-informed and people find out, they’ll think it is completely within their rights to send you death threats even if you apologize, remove the content with the slur, and explain that it happened when you were young and didn’t understand as much as you do today. Somehow you’re still the asshole in the situation? (You’re not. You’re not the asshole)

I’m going to need white feminists to recognize that Lena Dunham is a casual racist. While I have heard interviews with her defending the all white cast on her show, I feel like the way she has responded to critiques about racism has often been seriously lacking. In fact, the only time I felt like she has adequately adressed this issue is in this NPR interview. I’m not saying people cannot enjoy Girls while still recognizing the problematic nature of her choices both in the show and in the rest of her life. But the fact is the majority of white feminist have rushed to the defense of Dunham rather than stepping back and really critiquing what is going on with her. Which is sad, but typical because most of the time white feminist are often more interested in jumping in to defend other white feminist when they have been offensive, proving that women of color and their place within the feminist movement is really only important to white feminist when it is convenient, as demonstrated by the hoopla over Laci Green’s close minded racist western white feminist comments about Islam earlier this year. When are white feminist going to start speaking out against racism in “feminist” circles? When are white feminist going to start critiquing the ways in which they are complacent in this casual racism? When are white feminist going to speak up BEFORE and WITH women of color about racism in feminism instead of waiting for us to explain how this is problematic, and the still rushing to the defense of white feminist, even when their behavior is clearly problematic? Until that day comes, don’t talk to me about intersectionality or bell hooks like you understand our struggle as women of color. Don’t talk to me about how you feminism is “inclusive” and “down” with the issues of women of color. Because when you still continue to support or defend the behavior of people like Lena Dunham you are just proving to me that your feminism ISN’T inclusive, intersectional, or progressive. And that kind of feminism isn’t worth shit to me.
