Kinder: Happy Hippo

Along with always wanting to try a Kinder Bueno, I saw on www.candyblog.net a few years ago, a very interesting Kinder product that I knew I had to try. Happy Hippos. First, let me say, that Candy Blog has been one of my sites to go to daily for several years now. I could never be as professional and technical as she is, but her site is amazing. I really love it when she posts teasers of what we can expect in the near future in the candy world. Thank you thank you thank you! I always know what to hunt for. On to the candy!

In my pack, there are five “Delicious INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED hippo shaped biscuits with a milk and hazelnut creamy filling”. I love how on the front, one of the hippos sacrificed his rear in order to show us the lovely cross section. Thank you, dear hippo, and apologies to the future hippos that I will consume. I will ask before I do, heads or tails.

These also come in a cocoa cream flavo(u)r as well. I think I will have to have my hands on those some time in the future. Mmmm.. chocolate..

Again we see the cross section but with a bit more detail on the back. It appears these hippos are wearing a layer of tasty meringue coating. They are crispy wafer biscuits filled with hazelnut creamy filling and milky creamy filling. I love, LOVE that on their nutrition facts, they print “energy” instead of “calories”. Which is true. Same thing. But it seems to make more sense to have it say energy to me. Although, then people will probably think, “WOAH 78394789 of energy! That’s how much I need! I’ll have so much energy I’ll be able to run around and get thin!!” Or have energy to eat more.. and more.. and .. more.. Okay. Maybe America needs to keep it was calories. It sounds more offensive, and it’s not like people who should care, will care, about how many calories they are consuming and what they need to actually do with those consumed calories anyways. Not that I’m promoting that people shouldn’t eat(CANDYCANDY okay carrots are good too guys..and other.. healthy.. stuff.. ) I guess it does say on the front that there are 121 calories per biscuit.. Hmm. and on the nutrition facts it says “fibre”.. parle vous francais? Or is it like old English.. Theatre vs. theater? Eww. Does anyone seriously spell it theater though? It just looks wrong! Before I start eating these things, I also want to randomly say, that I find it interesting that almost everything I’ve had so far from the UK, they almost all say no artificial colors. And everything is pretty tasty still! They don’t need bright, obnoxious dyes to be tasty! Why do we do that? I mean, yes, the candies are much more pretty and appealing, but why? If we didn’t know them as bright candy, would we think they are just as delicious if we didn’t have that to compare it to? Just random things I think about, but not hard enough to where I’ve actually gotten into researching it. Yet..

Aw, these guys are pretty tiny! THEY HAVE EYEBROWS AND NOSTRILS!!

Shut up, no way, they have a freakin’ tail!?!?!

Well, kind of more like just a spot for a tail, but still! AH! They’re so adorable! I almost, ALMOST don’t want to eat him. The little meringue bits make me think he’s wading in a giant bubble bath or something.

So the meringue bits are just that. Crunchy little pieces. Not really much flavor to them. If anything, they taste like hazelnut since the hazelnut pretty much takes over and that’s all this thing smells like. But I’m not complaining. They fall off pretty easily too.  The wafer is a bit tougher than the Bueno, but not a whole lot. It’s pretty crunchy, but does melt in the mouth a bit. Again, the hazelnut filling is sooo smooth and creamy. The milky filling is a bit more thick. Almost custard like. It’s just very sweet and, well, milky. Close to a white chocolate taste, but not as obnoxious(or I guess uh delicious if you really like white chocolate.. it’s usually a very sickenly sweet pointless flavor to me. Blech.). I feel really strange taking pictures of this. Haha. This hippo chose tails, so I bit the butt off first. So taking a picture of, the end, is, I don’t know really how to explain without sounding terribly perverted. Like, why would someone even think that of a candy? IT’S CANDY IT’S INNOCENT! It’s not actually a butt! IT’S OKAY!

These guys are pretty sweet though. Delicious, but sweet enough to where the tiny size is probably best. I’m finding it a bit tough to finish the one. Give me a minute.. or two. I’ll be good. I can’t imagine how delicious the cocoa ones must be. Ahh.. some day.. But it’s impossible for these hippos to not make someone happy. Whether it’s because you get to eat one, or just look at it, these guys are pretty awesome. Just look at them! THEY HAVE EYEBROWS!!
