Civil Rights Era Photographer, Shel Hershorn

Hershorn followed the Kennedy campaign trail, captured the standoff between Gov. Wallace and black students, and got the shot of a mortally-wounded Lee Harvey Oswald being loaded into an ambulance. 

His images were later on the covers of Life, Time and Sports Illustrated, but his wife told the Santa Fe New Mexican that the Kennedy assassination broke his heart. He rented a van and moved to New Mexico to make furniture and teach photography.

Sonja Hershorn says his winning personality helped him get access to take those iconic shots.

“He could charm the birds out of the trees,” she said, “a Texas sheriff from his gun.”
