2013, Pontianak Siap Menjadi Kota Wisata Kuliner Halal

Kota Pontianak ternyata memiliki deretan kuliner lezat, seperti bubur pedas, sayur keladi, ikan asam pedas, paceri nanas, gulai kepala ikan, dan masih banyak lainnya.

A visit to the most efficient food stand

I knew from the start, a trip around Kalimantan will be a challenge for me food wise.  For one, I would be surrounded by food that I grew up with.  Along the shore of Kalimantan, we are well known for our fresh seafood and in the household where I grew up, we eat more seafood than meat.  It is not unusual for us to not eat meat for the whole week, but seafood.  It would be more unusual to have no seafood on the table.  And when it comes to meat, it usually comes in the form of free range chicken.

For the trip itself, it was done with several childhood friends that have the agenda of tempting my taste bud.  One of my friends said of all people, he cannot believe I will be the one trying to be a vegetarian.  That is simply out of the question, judging from how glutton I was previously.  I do not blame him.  But the trip comes and goes.  I eat mostly stir-fry vegetables when we were ordering food in traditional road side restaurants.  Or if I cannot have the option of vegan meal, I’ll choose Vegetarian, else I’ll skip the meat in a dish.  One of the only slips I have would be the usual sauces that might have shrimps or shrimp paste. That I told myself is an exception to this trip.

I suppose there are many types of Vegetarian or Vegan out there.  For me at this stage, I think I am the type where I don’t get too carried away and be a food nazi when it comes to food choices.  Food nazi is never fun in any group of people.  And if you let food dictates your existence, you’ll forget to live and let go.  And I suppose I came across several gems in terms of vegetarian choices.

One of them is this tiny food stall nestled between alleys.  One of my friends were very enthusiastic in bringing us to this stall, especially knowing that I am a Vegetarian.  The stall’s specially are range of fruit salads or Rujak and small snacks.  In indonesia, we usually have them for in between meals.

We were right to be early to be at the food stand.  We arrived to find the stall empty except 4 or 5 ladies waiting for their lady boss to arrive for work too.  The lady boss is a plumb large women hence the stall is known as ‘The fat lady fruit salad’ stall.  Every body in town knows the stand.  We were told by the assistants to take our seats and serve ourselves to whatever food we can find first on the table.  Self service to the core.

The empty food stand waiting for the lady boss to arrive.

We obliged and took our seat.  Before long a guy arrived with a motorbike carrying goodies calls Chye Kueh, or dumpling with fillings of Jicama roots and a container full of Bongko.  He just placed them on the table and left for other errants.

Chye Kueh, dumpling with Jicama roots filling.  Delicious!

Kueh Bongko with coconut shavings and palm sugar.  I thought it must have contain eggs as they were almost like custard.  Only later to find that the recipe does not have eggs at all, but rice flour and natural green from Pandan leaves among others.

So simple, so perfect. Bingka with coconut shavings and palm sugar.

The lady boss arrives after five of us having helped ourselves to the appetizers before us.  The whole stall seems to turned into life instantaneously.  The 4 or 5 ladies assistance that were gossiping away previously sprung into action, preparing the ice, cutting the vegetables, taking orders from customers.  The customers also began coming in droves, some clearly are local and others from other town like us.

I havent had this cracker in the longest time, had it when I was in grade school.  It’s made of tapioca flour. Delicious.

By the end of the meal, we were given a blank paper to help ourselves to write whatever we had ate.  Now if that’s not most efficient system that relies much on honesty and trust, I haven’t seen one similar yet.  A very refreshing idea, and I might be being overly dramatic but instances like this that makes me think that I see glimmer of hope in humanity.

A trip in Kalimantan: Singkawang

So last week for New Year’s eve I found myself making a trip Northwards of Kalimantan with a childhood friend of mine and couple of friends of friends.  I have always wanted to go to this old town in West Kalimantan since I was young, the name’s Singkawang.  An old Chinese town in West Kalimantan, where the Chinese Hakka been settling there since 18th century when there was a big gold rush. For now, the town’s known for the beaches, hills, food and young Chinese ladies strolling about doing their daily chores.  The latter being so well known that there are considerable numbers of Singaporean and Taiwanese men who came to this town just to find themselves brides to bring home.

But I was’t looking for a bride.  I was there to soak up the nostalgic old town feel and perhaps see some of the famous tourist spots.  Arriving into the town, we heads up to the hillside to catch a view of the north shore of Kalimantan.

image

The view did not disappoint.  I have grew up in South of West Kalimantan state all my life and only this time manages to  catch this view.  It goes to say, sometimes you don’t get to appreciate all that is closer to your backyard until you make an effort to look out for it.

In recent times, Singkawang has been upgrading itself to be one of the major tourist destinations in the region.  And they have been successful to certain extend.  You will be hard pressed to find accommodation during 15th day of lunar New Year festival whereby rooms have been booked months prior.  But I am glad to miss the peak season during my visit where I’m still able to stroll around town without struggling my way with the tourist crowd.

The only crowd I have to maze through are the locals in the morning market.  Gives me that anytime!

I remember the morning market, perching on the river, being bombarded with every sensations to your five senses.

I remember the quiet corners of the hill trails.

I remember spending last day of 2011 by the beach that has coconut trees too many to mention.
