Just Label It

So I know I’ve been sort of MIA when it comes to fun foodie posts but I’ve been super busy. I PROMISE I have a backstock of scrumptious meals from the past week to regale you with.

But I just came across this website, justlabelit.org, and I really want to share it.

As it stands, there are no laws in the United States that require genetically modified foods to be labeled. I think this is absurd. So do 93% of Americans, apparently. If you are one of them, tell the FDA to label our food so that we can choose.

Ron Finley: A guerilla gardener in South Central LA | Video on TED.com

ted.com

Ron Finley plants vegetable gardens in South Central LA — in abandoned lots, traffic medians, along the curbs. Why? For fun, for defiance, for beauty and to offer some alternative to fast food in a community where “the drive-thrus are killing more people than the drive-bys.”

I just watched the TED talk linked below and felt inspired to share it with you all. We’re at a pivotal point in human history in which corporate interests override any interest in human health and life. We need to change that narrative. There’s no other way to change the narrative than to take action.

Taking over our access to food is not only necessary, it’s also a beautiful thing. We need to get back in touch with our soil and thus our history. Human beings are foragers, hunters, gardeners, innovators at heart. Instinctually, it’s about survival, but even further down, it’s about our connection with the earth and all it gives us. If you believe in God, it’s about what God has offered us: this delicate land of plenty.

I felt particularly inspired today because here in Hilo, we are re-claiming state land to grow food by taking our shovels, sweat, and hearts to the front of the famous King Kamehameha statue. There is growing resistance here against the big agricultural institutions that are polluting the land with chemicals and GMOs and polluting the state government with money and personnel.

This is not a Hawaii specific issue. It’s global. Everyone can participate.

May 25th is March Against Monsanto Day all around the globe. There will be marches in nearly every big city in the U.S. Everyone should participate one way or another, whether you put your feet onto the pavement and march or simply plant organic kale seeds/seedlings in a vacant plot or traffic median. What’s important is that we change our consciousness on who really owns what. We can’t be owned by corporations. They aren’t people. We are sentient living beings that really have the control. The rest is illusion.

JustLabelit.org : Have You Told your Senator?

salsa3.salsalabs.com

JustLabelit.org encourages the people to let our Senator know that we have the right to Labels , to Labels being correct & complete, and to know what really is in our food.

Not just a power trip or bone to pick. Labels are the founding blocks of food allergy awareness. We NEED to know, our lives and airways depend on it.

Manja!
