Hey Vertigo can Johanna Constantine have her own series please
or at least another mini?
She’s kind of amazing
This mini was really fun, and I enjoyed all of the connections she has with her distant relation, even if she shares many of his less savoury characteristics as well (I sobbed as soon as she said “trust me”)… even an old Swamp Thing showed up! But I want morestories about her - maybe more about her adventures with Orpheus. Her appearance in Sandman kind of glossed over her travels between France and Greece, there’s an opportunity. Just give me something.
She’s so fabulous :’)
A Chat with Susanne Bartsch
We’re proud to announce our new weekly party with host extraordinaire, Susanne Bartsch. What can we say about Susanne other than she’s a straight-up nightlife legend. With her lavish party concepts and dress up extravaganzas, Susanne stepped up the game for the realm of nightlife communities… and we love her for it. The cherry on top? We got her every Tuesday at Le Bain, The Standard New York, with her new party, “On Top”.
The Standard asked her a few questions about the new weekly, and managed to siphon the secret to her fountain of youth (who would have thunk, Nivea?)…
The Standard: You’ve lived (and championed over) several eras in New York City nightlife. First off, can you tell us the earliest memory of your first big party that got you hooked in? What year and who was the party for?
Susanne Bartsch: Savage, Chelsea, 1989. There was just this massive commitment to aesthetic; seeing hundreds of people decked head to toe in personally made costume. That was savage, a thousand people wearing their own personal creations — looks that they breathed life into with their own hands.
Which movement (in music or art or anything) would you say was the one that influenced you most heavily and informed your visual style?
Fashion to me is about mood. I wear what I feel. My aesthetic is ephemeral, I’m blessed by an eclectic muse. I’m the type of person who finds the pre-raphaelites equally inspiring as the modernism of bahaus.
If you had to name any city in the world that you fantasize retiring in, which city would it be and why?
I’m never going to retire. I’m an internationalist.
Can you give us the top 3 secrets to staying so youthful and high energy throughout the decades?
Live young, Love Young, and Nivea.
Tell us a little bit about this new party at The Standard Hotel. What is the name and theme of this new party?
The party is called “On Top”. and it’s at Le Bain and the rooftop of the Standard New York. It is an art gallery, a forum for people to express themselves and creative freedom. It’s a mix of people from all walks from all walks of life coming together to transform themselves or not, through looks, great music, dancing, flirting and forgetting your troubles.
Who are the DJ names that will be part of this new family of parties?
The DJ’s are Johanna Constantine, Sparber, and Will Automagic
What words of advice would you give your child while growing up in the jungles of new york parties and keeping her head straight amongst it all?
Do looks. It’s everything and stay clean.
Last but not least, what would you tell our readers is dress attire for The Standard party?
Anything goes. Nothing is too much. Show me some skin.
