Joey Hudy's 3x3x3 LED Cube Shield
So Whisker and I went to visit Joey on our epic road trip as I’ve mentioned before, and not only was it a lot of fun but Joey totally gave me his awesome 3x3x3 LED Cube kit. Before even putting it together, I was like, this’ll be like marshmallows and toothpicks, how hard can it be! And of course, it actually requires using a few brain cells :).
Here’s a link to the flickr showing all of the progress between this:

to this

I even have little mini directions! And if you want to try it yourself and make a nicer one, go to Joey’s website: http://lwjm.us to pick one up!
Some tips that I learned after the fact:
- When you’re making the individual layers, think about how the layers will connect to each other as they stack. Some of my wires were inside of the square, some were outside, and it made for some awkward soldering.
- Remove the black covering outside of the three central wires - they won’t be as noticeable :)
- Follow Joey’s directions haha…I put the headers on before putting the resistors and black wires, that made snipping the extra cleanly, a little difficult.
Otherwise, it looks super cool! I haven’t had a chance to hook it up to see how to make it work but I will at some point and when that comes, I’ll let you know! Thanks for the awesome Friday night project Joey :) I think I’m gonna pick up the blue one when it comes out!!

We take a break...
From our regularly scheduled routine to brag about @Joey_Hudy, one of our Zombietech.tv guests! He got the opportunity to go to the White House Science Fair as a maker of awesome to show off his marshmallow cannon as well as his LED kits and the like. There were some AMAZING pictures. We sincerely hope he had the chance to outline his zombie defense plan to the President!
Well done Joey!!
Description from the White House’s Press Office:
• Student “Making” and Starting Small Business to Sell his Invention. Fourteen year old Joey Hudy from Phoenix, Arizona is already a Maker Faire veteran. He invented an Extreme Marshmallow Cannon and an LED Cube Microcontroller Shield, which he has exhibited at Maker Faires in New York, San Francisco, and Detroit. He received 2 Editors Choice Awards from Maker Faire, and has started a small business selling the microcontroller (Arduino) shield kits on several websites. As the World’s Largest Do-It-Yourself Festival, Maker Faire is the premier event for grassroots American innovation.
While setting up:

Showing off his cannon (which btw, amazing stand too) and +1 on the color choice:

Even made it to be The Atlantic’s photo of the day!:

Road Trip Day 9!
So today was another grand day of travel which started from Palm Springs and went to the Phoenix area with Joey Hudy and then to Albuquerque! So we left the hotel a little late because we had gotten into the hotel late. But this was good because the first time we could actually meet up with Joey was after 3pm!
So first, the desert is really hot. Like really hot. 95-100 degrees hot. I used to think that because it was dry heat, you wouldn’t really feel it, but that’s a myth. Whisker got a sunburn on his hand just from walking from the hotel to our car (lol). Weak constitution! Anyway, there is also a lot of desert. And we got to see some cool sanddevils running around out there. I was initially concerned about overheating the car, but she did just fine.
So we got to Joey’s place, and pretty much stayed there until right after sunset. His entire family is awesome. His sister is an uber amazing artist who makes the cutest things which I’ll link to at some point, and he himself just has kits up the wazoo and ideas up the wazoo. His mom is like the mom every engineer kid would want to have, she’s incredibly supportive of their endeavors. And the father is a pretty smart man himself too. All in all, we had a great time talking to them and looking at projects. The excitement is contagious! Thanks to their family for allowing us to stay for so long!
And then it was our trip to Albuquerque - mostly in the dark - but you know, it wasn’t all together that bad. I would have liked to be able to see what we had around because according to our friend in ABQ, we passed the badlands where you can see black lava on the rocks. That would have been neat. But now that’s just another excuse to visit!
The temperature is also great at night - a nice cool 50-70 degrees depending on your elevation. I absolutely loved it, though I did have to break out the jacket once because of the wind. And by the end, because it had been a long day already, I went a little delirious by the end of the drive and kept myself awake by belting out the words I knew to random songs. Whisker didn’t know if that was worse or if my making up my own songs was worse ^_^.
