“All motion is relative. Maybe it's you who've moved away by standing still.” ”

“But to be liked, you must never disagree. And if you never disagree, it's like only breathing in and never breathing out! A man can suffocate on courtesy.”

If He Walked into My Life (Live)

Faith Prince

Faith Prince sings “If He Walked into My Life” on her CD Total Faith

“In a child's power to master the multiplication table there is more sanctity than in all your shouted "Amens!", "Holy, holies!", and "Hoshannahs!" An idea is a greater monument than a cathedral. And the advance of man's knowledge is more of a miracle than any sticks turned into snakes or the parting of the waters!”

—Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, Inherit the Wind

It’s Today (Reprise #1)” from Mame (1968 Tour)

music/lyric Jerry Herman book Jerome Lawrence, Robert E. Lee

performance Angela Lansbury

Angela’s performance on this bootleg is even more extraordinary than the cast album indicates.  She brings to the role an innocent—though thoroughly self-centered—daffiness to the role.  And she brings the essential warm without losing the dryness of the wit.  Now that my two other favorite musicals (Follies and Into the Woods) have made it to New York (I’ve in fact seen 2 productions of each since moving here), I need to focus on energies on willing a Mame revival into existence.

My Best Girl” from  from Mame (1968 Tour)

music/lyric Jerry Herman book Jerome LawrenceRobert E. Lee

performance Angela Lansbury, Stuart Getz

Happy Birthday Angie!  This is probably my favorite song in the show.  And I think the bit of scene leading into is lovely.  I also love this take—somewhat more tender than what’s on the OBCR.

“Progress has never been a bargain… you have to pay for it. Sometimes I think there’s a man who sits behind a counter and says, 'You can have a telephone but you lose privacy and the charm of distance. Madame, you may have the vote but at a price. You lose the right to retreat behind your powder puff and your petticoat. Mister, you may conquer the air but the birds will lose their wonder and the clouds will smell of gasoline.' ”

Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, Inherit the Wind, 1955

“My God, a whole country of us who only want to be liked. But to be liked, you must never disagree. And if you never disagree, it's like only breathing in and never breathing out! A man can suffocate on courtesy.”

—The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail (Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee)

“A neurotic is a man who builds a castle in the air. A psychotic is the man who lives in it. A psychiatrist is the man who collects the rent. ”

—~Jerome Lawrence

“A neurotic is a man who builds a castle in the sky. A psychotic is the man who lives in it. A psychiatrist is the man who charges them both rent. ”
