Gazans thank Iran with billboards

No amount of GCC-sponsored sectarian agitation will blind the Palestinian people to their true allies or make them re-order their priorities. Awesome <3

Excerpts from the Jerusalem Post piece:

“Gazans offered very public thanks to Iran on Tuesday for helping them in this month’s fight against Israel, when Iranian-made missiles were fired out of the Palestinian enclave towards Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

“Thank you Iran”, said large billboards on three major road junctions in the Gaza Strip - the first time there has been such public acknowledgement of Iran’s role in the arming of Islamic terrorists in the tiny territory.

The message was written in Arabic, English, Hebrew and Farsi. The posters also depicted the Iranian Fajr 5 rockets that were used for the first time to target Israel’s two largest population centers.

The billboards were not signed, but a senior official with the Islamic Jihad, Khader Habib, said it was only natural to show gratitude for Iran’s role in the conflict.

“Iranian rockets struck at Tel Aviv. They reached out to Jerusalem. Therefore it was our duty to thank those who helped our people,” he told Reuters.”

Why the FBI Failed to Investigate Ft. Hood Killer BEFORE He Killed

The FBI was too concerned about political correctness and did not launch an investigation into a man who was later charged with killing 13 people in a 2009 attack at the Fort Hood military installation in Texas, despite significant warning signs that he was an Islamic extremist bent on killing civilians, according to a lawmaker briefed on a new report about the terrorist attack.

….

Much was already known about the series of oversights and missteps the government made leading to the terror attack at the Fort Hood Army post. Soon after the attack, it was revealed that members of two FBI anti-terrorism task forces saw emails between the Army psychiatrist and al-Awlaki

[a known Islamic terrorist] beginning in December 2008. Those task forces reviewed the communications and decided they were in keeping with Hasan’s research at the time, and as a result, no formal investigation of Hasan was opened. Hasan was writing a research paper about the effects of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Read it all.

There were multiple signs and warnings that Nidal Hasan was an Islamic jihadi operative who had infiltrated the US military with the intent to commit jihad against the infidel. And this was no big fucking deal to the military or to the FBI, all of whom ignored the warnings until 13 innocent people were dead by Hasan’s hand. And even afterwards, the military continued SENDING HASAN PAYCHECKS EVERY 2 WEEKS. (Thankfully, he never has seen one dime of this money because the banks refused to cash the checks.) Even now, no one wants to deal with the massive scandal that is the cover-up of the true intentions and motives of Nidal Hasan.

Gaza rights groups accuse Hamas of abuses

Local NGOs report violent attack on Shia worshippers during ceremony, and knifing of Al Mezan Centre executive

Palestinian rights groups say masked Hamas police beat and detained members of the Gaza Strip’s tiny Shia Muslim community during a religious commemoration last week.

It was the first claim of harassment by a group of Shia worshippers against the territory’s rulers, who are Sunni Muslims. Hamas officials denied the allegations. Hamas is believed to enjoy close ties with Iran, the Shia Islamic republic.

Rights groups reported on Tuesday a separate incident that also occurred last week - a knife attack on a local non-governmental organisation executive.

The accusations came as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the main Palestinian Islamist movements, were holding talks about merging their two factions, according to sources on both sides.

A man who described himself as a Shia Muslim said police burst into a house where followers were marking Arbaeen, commemorating the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Complaints filed

The man said about 15 worshippers were beaten and detained. He declined to be identified, fearing further harassment.

But some of the men filed complaints to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights and the Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights, which both sharply condemned Hamas over the attack.

Mezan said in a statement that during Saturday evening’s incident in the town of Beit Lahia, police smashed up the apartment, broke the bones of seven of the men, detained some of them at a police station and beat them again before sending them to a military hospital for treatment.

“The attack is a violation of the freedom … to practise one’s faith,” Samir Zakout, a Mezan official, said.

Ihab Ghussein, a Hamas interior ministry spokesman, said on Tuesday that police stormed the apartment of a group of “outlaws” who were planning “criminal acts”.

He also said he was unaware of the presence of any Shia Muslims in Gaza and that his offices would look into right groups’ allegations that the men were beaten.

There are no official statistics on the number of Gaza’s Shia Muslims. They are believed to number several dozen - a minuscule minority among a population of 1.6 million people who are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim.

Attack on advocate

In Tuesday’s second incident, Al Mezan Centre said a prominent rights activist who has criticised Palestinian leaders and fighters, was attacked by unknown assailants.

Mahmud Abu Rahma, international relations director at the Al Mezan, was stabbed multiple times by several masked men on Friday evening, the Gaza-based centre said in a statement.

He was stabbed in the back, leg and shoulders, but used his laptop computer to prevent the attackers from stabbing him in the chest, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) said in a separate statement on the incident.

“Mr Abu Rahma has received many threats on his mobile and email, including messages threatening his safety and life,” the centre said, adding that the threats made reference to an article by Abu Rahma entitled “The Gap between Resistance and Governance”.

The article, published in Arabic on several websites and later translated into English, warned that both the Palestinian “resistance” groups and government were failing ordinary citizens.

“Who will protect citizens from the mighty resistance and the powerful government when one, or both, of them harm them?” he wrote in an English-language version of the article published on January 5 by the Palestinian news agency Maan.

And he said Palestinian fighters endangered civilians by operating in crowded areas, creating the risk that their weapons would accidentally injure  or kill locals, and raising the likelihood that Israeli response attacks would affect civilians.

Al Mezan said the attack was the second time Abu Rahma had been targeted since January 2. Ghussein, the Hamas spokesman, said the incidents were under investigation.

“The complaint was only filed yesterday,” he told the AFP news agency, saying it was “surprising” that it took several days to be reported to authorities.

Hamas-Jihad talks

On the political front, Gaza’s Hamas prime minister, Ismail Haniya, speaking during a meeting with senior officials from Islamic Jihad, called for “opening a serious dialogue to achieve the merger of the two movements”, according to a statement from his office.

Islamic Jihad confirmed that talks to merge with Hamas were already under way.

“An in-depth dialogue has actually begun, both internally and externally, with the aim of uniting,” Daud Shihab, a spokesman, said, referring to the group’s leadership which, like Hamas, is based in both Gaza and Damascus.

All previous attempts to merge the two Islamist movements had ended in failure, Shihab said.

He indicated that the current talks were taking place “at the highest level” among the leaders of both factions in Gaza and Damascus as well as among Islamist prisoners being held in Israeli jails.

Uniting the two movements would be “in the interests of both the Palestinian cause and the future of the Palestinian liberation movement, particularly in light of the Arab Spring”, he said.

It was the first time Hamas and Jihad have spoken publicly about merging.

Hamas: Israel threatened to cancel ceasefire over Mashaal visit

maannews.net

9th December, 2012

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) – Israel threatened to cancel the ceasefire agreement brokered by Egypt if Hamas’ chief in exile and his delegation visited the Gaza Strip for the movement’s 25th anniversary, says senior Hamas leader Izzat al-Rishiq.

In an interview with the Hamas-affiliated al-Aqsa TV Saturday, al-Rishiq said, “We received real threats that occupation could cancel the ceasefire agreement or do anything.”

Al-Rishiq highlighted that Mashaal decided to visit the Gaza Strip even at personal risk.

Describing the “historic” visit by Hamas’ leaders in exile to Gaza, he said, “This is a great view, and we are happy to set foot on the pure land of Gaza and met from the very beginning with our people.”

He added: “Our people should be more assured about resistance. Hamas is a resistance movement, and without resistance there will be no Hamas.”

On Thursday Islamic Jihad officials said Israel threatened to assassinate the leader of Islamic Jihad if he entered the Gaza Strip, causing the party to reconsider.

Egyptian authorities told Islamic Jihad that Israel rejected the visit and would target leader Ramadan Shalah and his deputy Ziad Nakhla if they went into Gaza, sources close to the discussions told Ma’an.

Islamic Jihad leaders were considering whether to cancel the visit Thursday.

Israel launched an 8-day assault on Gaza that ended Nov. 21 with a ceasefire agreement mediated by Egypt.

Ma’an

And they claim they don’t occupy Gaza anymore.

memo re: Islamist groups and public's motive for politics

So - there are articulations that ‘Islamists now gaining votes - are talking pragmatic, but that maybe a temporary guise for the sake of economy, international relations and domestic public support - in mid-long term, these Islamists might go back to their original ideological/religious agendas.’

But meanwhile, I see less or least about ‘what actually people/public in the region wants (or why they participate in current, newly emerged kind of politics:what are their motives?)

Then just posted Gallup poll on Egypt indicated Egypt’s popular demands are - plain and simple - very basic. Employment, economy, security, stability, development and education.

whether people supported the party, Al-Nour party, sort of the conservative, or the Muslim Brotherhood, or liberals, their priorities for the next government were

A. Employment

B. Economic Development

C. Stability and Security

D. Education

Dalia Mogahed, Abu Dhabi Gallup Center

Then, another facet of this subject is: how leaders of these Islamist groups are thinking: Today there was a report re: Gaza’s Islamic Jihad’s top

“Muhammad al-Hindi, another Jihad official based in Gaza, said at the time that closer cooperation would help give the uprisings across the Arab world a more “Islamic dimension.”

[” Jihad leader: Unity with Hamas is not political tactic”   http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=455286]

So

1) [if] people or public prioritizing employment and economic development first

2) then how Islamist group tops would proceed - [regionally/region as a whole, or more locally]

These 2 points - facets - how they would go -

Have to be monitored.

Why Islamic Jihad is the new Hizbullah

And this is why I think Islamic Jihad are the new Hizbullah: in a press conference today their armed wing, the Quds Brigade, announced that it had fired 620 rockets into the Zionist entity (which represents around 40% of all rockets fired from Gaza) including Grad missiles and Fajr 5 rockets as well as Fajr 3 rockets. Its fighters also took credit for firing Kornet rockets [at the military jeep], anti-warships missiles and advanced rockets launchers. IJ also announced its successful electronic warfare in penetrating 5000 mobile phones belonging to Zionist officers and soldiers who took part in the invasion.
That’s one impressive performance by such a small resistance group.

More Explosions in Central Gaza

The militant group Islamic Jihad says one of its armed men has been killed and another wounded in an explosion in the central Gaza Strip. Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmad says the car in which the men were traveling was hit by an Israeli airstrike. The Israeli military said it was checking the report. The Islamic Jihad men who congregrated outside the hospital in Deir el-Balah late Wednesday said the militant had been involved in launching rockets.

Israel regularly targets Gaza militants responsible for firing rockets. Militants have dramatically increased their arsenal and now threaten major urban centers in Israel’s south. Islamic Jihad is a small faction in Gaza, ruled by the more powerful militants of Hamas.
