Beginning January 1, 2011, all paid tax preparers must have a Preparer Tax Identification Number before preparing returns. Additionally, by December 2013, all Registered Tax Preparers will be required to pass a proficiency exam. You can sign up for your PTIN online or by paper application. The cost per year is $64.25. The IRS may want to rethink the process…see story below.
The IRS is now considering requiring certain tax return preparers to undergo a background check as part of the PTIN requirements. Preparers will be contacted if they are required to undergo a background check in the future.
